Default Mercedes Benz SLS. according to CFOT.

Alluding to 8up's thread, I found myself wandering around the "other" place. Found an interesting thread, until I reached post #20. Can this be true? Sounds absurd.

I think the post was referencing service for the SLR, not the SLS.

It's not my first choice, but it does look better in person to me. If I were to get one, I would go for the convertible. I really don't care for the funky doors on the coupe.

That SLS roadster is just gorgeous, but for my money take that SLS cash, and buy a new AMG GT S instead... way better looking coupe...

The SLR is a $250K+ hypercar... imagine feeling the pain of a $40K service on a $40K used car... that kinda stuff happens in Ferrari World...

Honestly, M-B has just gone south with their styling the last few years IMHO. What they've lost Audi has found.

I like to think that is because all the Audi executives and dept. heads are seeing Lamborghinis all the time in various meetings and corporate messages...

A few months ago I was having a conversation with the owner of a local independent Mercedes-Benz shop. The guy has a top notch reputation in the area and we were discussing the AMG models. AMG is basically M-B's hot rod and his advice was to steer clear of them unless I had really deep pockets. And even then he said it's ridiculous what they charge for service.

I wanted to know more about the SL 63 (the AMG version of the SL 550...more or less what the Z06 is to the standard Vette) and after looking into it more closely, I'm much more likely to upgrade to an SL 550. You have to ask yourself if you really need 600hp in a two seat roadster. He also said any of the V12 models fit into this category. There is almost nothing you can do to those cars on your own and the repair bill for things like coil packs, injectors and the ABC Suspension can give you heart failure. I'm a member of MBWorld and I see people who can easily afford these cars complaining about the cost of service all the time.

All that said, it should be pointed out that the SLR McLaren and the SLS are considered supercars and as such, they do not fall into the realm of "normal" Mercedes service, even when it comes to the AMG V8's and V12's.

Oh...and after reading the threads I read today, Corvette Forum is THE LAST place I'd go to ask about anything except info on Corvettes, and even then it depends on who's talking as to how reliable the information is. Most of those blowhards don't know the difference between dog shit and a good grade of apple butter.

Ferrari's high service costs and procedures have become de rigueur and almost legendary. The F355 springs immediately to mind, as having had real world experience with one, but ANY of them really require a serious annual maintenance budget be set aside for them.

Mercedes Benz, on the other hand, IMO, has a tradition of building stout vehicles that are perfectly able to remain reliable for a LONG time. I suppose though, hyper-cars are high maintenance, no matter who builds them.

I was totally referencing the F355... There was a story a few years ago about a guy that bought one and within 1000 miles of purchase had doubled what he spent buying the car in the service bay and I think all he did was clutch, cam belts, replaced cracked exhaust headers, and replace a bunch of interior switches/buttons because the originals had become like some kid's half-sucked Jolly Ranchers, all sticky and squishy. Taught me the value of a good PPI and up-to-date services!

We have to remember that, despite the three-pointed star everywhere, the SLR isn't really a Mercedes, it's actually a McLaren.

I work for Nissan in the parts department.
I can tell you that a brake job on a GTR costs over $7k in parts.
We had one in a couple of weeks back for "erratic shifting". Trans replacement under warranty was a tad over $16k in parts alone.
Helped my budget for the month!

Absolutely correct. Timing belt replacement comes to mind.

That's also correct although with some of the AMG V8's and especially the V12's, many services are "engine-out" procedures. But reading through MBWorld, many V12 owners swear by their cars, claiming wonderful reliability. Mercedes are for the most part very reliable, but there are a few things that...if they go wonky...will make your knees buckle as you write a check for repairs.
