Default My first experience with Obamacare...

Actually my daughter's experience, but close enough. Now that she's working I told her to get her own health care policy. Blue Cross/Blue Shield is what she has now on my policy, so I suggested that she apply to them since they know her history.

She's 25-years-old, great health, uses no prescription drugs, doesn't smoke. Her monthly premium for a $5,000 deductible policy: $153. In December, 2014, that goes to $308/month. Affordable health care, my ass....

$447/mo next year.

Tell her start chasing ambulances. The nice ones. And wear a skirt. Modest of course.

Has she priced it on your state exchange yet? Or on the federal exchange?

I have Anthem Blue Cross now, and they will be raising my premium in January 1st, which I expected. I haven't firmed the deal up yet, but my state exchange will give me a substantial decrease from what I have been paying (and for a much better plan), although this is mostly because my household income level since my wife retired has decreased, and I only work part time.

I bet those prices include coverage for having a baby. Know how much having a baby with the whole prenatal/hospital delivery thing costs? She is in the 21-25 YO group right now. Some of those are having kids, and if you are the sucker that pays retail for that, I'm sure the whole ball of wax is at least $ 12-15K, and that is if everything goes well. Have a problem, start thinking exponentially. That's a lot of risk, right there.

She almost doubles premium next year. She will be in the 26-30 age group. How many of those women will be having babies? That's like insuring a bunch of drivers who you know, statistically and historically, will be having expensive wrecks. Got to factor all that in the premium.

I'm not blaming the insurance company; I'm blaming Obamacare for the cost. She doesn't want maternity coverage; she's not married, doesn't plan to get married for a while, and doesn't want kids until she's in her thirties.

Does anyone know if maternity care has to be carried forever, even for a woman who can no longer have kids?

I don't think there are co-pays with Obamacare, but I'm not positive.

Blue Cross already has 80%-90% of the health insurance written in my State. I really don't feel comfortable switching to an unknown company that I've never heard of. Until very recently, no companies had signed up with the State exchange.

I see. Anthem Blue Cross is participating in my state exchange. Perhaps they will in yours eventually.

People simply cannot afford that. They can't now, and they can't in the future. In a year my kid will be paying at least $3700 a year for health insurance. That would be over 10% of the yearly earnings of the average person here. And she's young and healthy. What about the person who's 40-years-old and earning the average wage here?

I would love to know the answer to this....haven't been able to have kids for years (and I'm nowhere near menopause).

I know what to say, but I really don't want you to take it personally, as it does involve the legal profession.....and to be honest, there are WAY too may lawyers for the honest work involved.....

SO the ambulance chasers.....and all of any .org from .gov down the list is sued outta existence over some stubbed toe or other.....

this drives medical costs over the roof, and GOD help us for other liability costs....

then we get into FLORIDA No Fault insurance, that cost this household over 3 grand....outta pocket, plus my labor to fix shit.....not like I doing a whole hell of a lot anyway....but really....

then the ancient shit that went on decades ago, crooked business partners, and so they will find out....when I reveal the news....

they know full well I not forgot....

What are the tax credits involved with that plan at her age?.
You didn't factor those in, in your OP.
There will be tax credits as well.
