Also since the servents had to wait on their masters on Christmas Day, they were given the day after Christmas to visit with their families. The Masters would give servants a box to take home with leftover food, bonuses, gifts, etc.

People in countries colonized by the British celebrate it to. My family (Jamaican) does even though they have had their own indepence for 50 years now. I am actually headed to my parents place in a few for lunch and to see some family who flew in.

In Canada, Boxing Day is more akin to Black Friday. Has been that way for the last couple of decades or so.

That's what I figured too. I jokingly suggested to someone here at work that it might have something to do with boxing things up. I was actually closer to the truth than I thought.

In my case you go buy some wood and build a kitchen counter at work.
Then you see really nice Microwave convection oven on sale so you grab that.
On the way to the cash register you also see a really nice Countertop rotisserie oven that you can cook a chicken or a roast in as well as bake pizzas and such. So you grab that also.
Oh and a garbage can.

It's only money!
