He was always controversial in F1, but he left on his own accord while still under contract to McLaren (as Wiki states).

I liked his brashness and aggressive driving in Formula One. As stated in the Wiki article, it reminded me of the 80's F1 - balls out, everybody racing to win at nearly all costs. Yup, didn't fit the new-style boring, boring, money-focused F1.

When I heard JPM hit the drying vehicle, I wondered if Michael Schumacher had a part-time gig as a track worker in Daytona. JPM's best screw-ups always seemed to involve the rear end of MS's car.
