Default Hey, DAB! Thought you might appreciate this.

My daughter called today to ask how my latest furniture project for her was progressing. It's a Queen Anne legged silver storage cabinet. She said that her BF really admires that I can build furniture and things, and he wants to know if I would teach him how. "Sure," I said--"Just tell him to come over." What I wanted to say was...how many years does he have to spend?

Anyone know where I should start? I thought I'd talk about safety first, how easy it is to lose a finger (or a hand) without realizing it until you notice some blood on the wall. Then the basics to get, a table saw with a 36" cut, a compound miter saw, a router; decent quality is okay, just replace the blades with carbide ones. Then we'll build a night stand with moulding and a drawer to get him used to close tolerances. Something to be painted, not stained.

I am, and I should. I said I make a horrible patient: I'm fighting giving in to it...which of course will only make things worse.

thought you were sick....

i started learning in Jr. HS...that was...ummm....35+ years ago, really got some decent tools about 8 years ago, pretty much self taught, but i don't mind stealing good ideas for design or joinery. with limited tools, it does affect what kind of joinery you can do.

if he's just starting out, try something small, like a recipe box. if it goes south, you don't have $400 worth of quartersawn white oak scraps to explain to the boss.

be safe.

Grab him by the wrist and and hold his hand next to the spinning table saw blade while you have "the talk" with him.
