Yaddy and T-Birds . . .
This place has been in town for a few years now, but today is the first time I was out walking around while my Mazda was getting its first service, so I pondered here and took a few pix.
I don't know who the guy is, but he puts old cars out every summer; I think the place is closed up in the winter. I don't even know if it was open today, I was expecting someone to come out and bend my ear but it didn't happen. At any rate, this is a '60 'Bird: This also said Thunderbird, but it is totally unrecognizable to me. I remember the '55s, '56s, and 57s, then they turned the entire American 2-seat sports car market over to Corvette when Ford brought out the '58 4-seater -- which didn't change a whole lot for several years, as I recall. But I have no clue what this is. And a '55 Buick Roadmaster. One of my uncles had two '55 verts, another uncle had a loaded '57 4-door hardtop: |

Second pic is a Thunderbird. Ford tried to revive it in 2002, but nobody bought them and they stopped making them in 2005.
Love that Roadmaster. |

The first picture is of a '65 or '66, not a '60.
The '02-'05 "retro" cars were for a niche market. The chassis was shared with Lincoln and Jaguar, as I recall. The marketing failed, in my opinion, because the engine lacked "American" character. In it's heyday, the TBird was Ford's performance model. You could order a sedan or wagon with the "Thunderbird" engine. The Retrobird lacked that halo. |

My first car was a 1955 Buick, a beast of a machine. Had the Dynaflow transmission so you never felt it shift. Vacuum operated wipers so when you needed them most like when stepping on the gas, they stalled and you were blind (nice). And you started the car by pressing the gas pedal all the way to the floor.
The "retro" T-bird shown above was built from 2002-2005 and never caught on, under-powered and limited appeal I had a 2002 and they were wonderful "relaxed cruisers" and stylish (IMO). |
