They're a LOT better now, especially with surgery. Much less invasive and no "gutting like a fish"

Never met mom's dad. Passed when she was seventeen. Her mom was his "kidnap" wife from Arkansas, my grandma when she was 14. Probably 30 years his junior, grandma was no sweet memah. She rained crap on us when we were kids Diabetes and gangrene for mom's dad.

I met dad's dad once in my life. Ozarks. Dad's mom was gramp's sixth wife and from what I could tell, they were all just maids for him. He had two brothers that both died in jail. Dad was the youngest kid of his, eighth and the only boy. Probably explains why pops ended up where he did; broke and having no reason to go on. Got a call one evening from his then terrible choice for a partner saying he wanted to pull the breathing tube (lung cancer) and basically told him we loved him, but it was his choice. Died in a couple hours. Dad's dad had some sort of heart failure. It was 1970, so the technology was not that great.

We were flying as a family from San Diego to Springfield, MO to visit grandparents and family. Dad's dad lived in Marshfield. Probably started off at 0600 back then for a plane trip. We got screwed in Dallas having been scheduled on a flight to Springfield that does not fly on Saturday (Boomer problems). So, dad went to make the $4 pay phone call that we'd be late. He came back almost white sheet... Only time I ever saw him like that. He said his dad had died the prior evening and now we're going to a funeral. He led quite the exciting life. Weird as a kid, but I had like 30 indirect cousins that I never knew about.

Don't know if I've told my secret sister story here, but dad had some of the genetics of his family that seemed to promote roaming. Thankful me and my non-secret sis both learned from the results.

Paternal g'father died at age 70 (5 days shy of 71), either of dementia or emphysema (my parents were kind of secretive about health issues). He was a WWI vet who received a partial pension for "shell shock". I was only 6 when he died, so don't have many memories.

Maternal g'father died at 58 (on my 7th birthday), most likely from liver failure from a life of excess drinking. My mom was a hardcore teetotaler as a result; never allowed any alcohol in the house.

My fraternal grandfather died at about 85- he was a smoker all his life. My maternal grandfather died at age 94, just old age I guess.
