My 10 year old GMC is still going strong and getting better fuel mileage everyday.

I ran my truck hard, over the last 10 years including racing, hauling and pulling. All using various power adders and tunes. The truck, except for the tune, intake and exhaust is as it was when it left the factory. The ONLY exception is the injectors that were replaced early on because of dirty fuel under warranty. When they replaced them, they doubled my factory warranty. Not one single issue since.

When I bought my '03 GMC, I was looking at the Ford F-250 SD. I liked the looks of the truck. My son was working at a local Ford Truck Dealership (Midway for the locals) and I could get his discount. Everyone at the dealership including a couple of the mechanics I knew there advised me to stay away from the new 6.0 Diesel.

I believe Ford has come a long way over the past 10 years and I will probably look at them again if I ever decide to trade in my '03. I just find it disturbing that they have had to "reinvent" themselves so many times in the last 10 years.

I'm not sure why they couldn't stick with the 7.3, but my first guess is emissions. I also have a tough time understanding why better fuel economy doesn't equal better emissions.

Emissions and fuel economy.

I have friends with 7.3's that have close to 300k on the clock. Very few issues with the engine.

We struggled for some time to explain to customers why their small displacement, higher power rated, Tier3 emissions compliant engine used more fuel per acre than previous models...

What we came up with was that the low emission engines, while smaller, more efficient, and cleaner burning....simply lacked the balls to do the job and were more often than not, running on the governor, whereas the previous engines...while making more emissions, were less likely to be on governor.

Lighter flywheels and a lightened rotating assembly, stores less energy for the engine to use...but allows it to "Dyno" with more available power....in applied situtations, it actually works harder.

A leaner fixed jet tune means that the engine will generally bog more easily and require more butterfly angle to keep the speed up.

Final thoughts...a cleaner more efficiently running engine, is not an optimized engine.

Ill assume this theory applies to other engines as well.

Obviously, I like the Duramax but I do wish the Cummins diesel was available in something other than a Dodge.

My '87 Dodge with a 12 valve Cummins is fun to play with. Truck is a POS but the engine along with the 5 spd stick is a hoot to drive.

We had a 2012 loaded up 2500, it was a really nice truck. Guy bought it over 4 moths ago as far as I know, not a single issue. I just bought a jeep, 3 moths ago no issues! Quality has seemed to improve, now those town and country's and caravans, nothing but issues

12v cummins 6BT in a 94-98e Ram 2500 4X4...with the 5 speed, hard to beat that combo...the trucks arent bad, we had few problems with ours that were not trans related, the truck held up extremely well to 225K miles of working.

Damned Cummins hold their value too...

I have 2 of the trucks with the Duramax in them. One is a 2007 Chevy with 170,000 miles on it and the other is a 2006 GMC with 230,000 miles on it. The 06 just came out of the shop after having a transmission seal put in it, other than that it has been in one other time for some front end work at about 220,000 miles. The 07 has never been touched. People don't believe me but I have drove the 07 too many times and checked the mileage time and time again. After I put the Bully Dog programmer on this truck it went from getting 20 MPG to 25 MPG. The 06 still gets right at 20MPG on stock settings. A good friend of mine used to work for the local Ford dealer and told me he loved the Powerstrokes for one reason only. JOB SECURITY

I have been running EFI Live on my D-Max for 8 years. I used to run Edge Juice with Attitude box, (5th level). BSeery over at CF has my old Edge box.

Best I got with my Edge was 21 mpg.

EFI lets you manipulate the ECM and TCM 100%. I'm playing around with a fuel economy tune and am getting a constant 24 mpg if I can keep my foot out of it.

It does seem like the higher HP tunes seem to get the best MPG.
