[CALL OUT FOR ALL GEEKS] Grr.... I hate Layer 8 of the IOS model

For those of you who know what the OSI model is, I find layer 8 to be the most frustrating.

I have three classrooms in one building that are computer labs. They have 24 student computers and one at the instructor station in each room. The tables they sit on are built for cable management. Well, they are falling apart and have been since before my time running IT on this campus. I mean, they are a damn disgrace and I'm ashamed students have paid for classes and had to deal with junk like this for so long.

5 years later, lot's of bitching and complaining from DJ, and we are finally getting all the furniture (tables, desks, etc...) replaced this summer when I do the computer refresh in these rooms, too. Woo Hoo.... a big win for DJ.

Now, our operations team has to be involved to make sure we get approved, uniform furniture and wot not and blah blah blah. Pain in the ass and it takes forever because the four women (no pics...god, please, no pics) can't ever make up their minds on what to do. I've shown them that this old stuff is literally falling apart, damaged, and is missing pieces, but they, who never has to deal with this stuff, insist there's nothing wrong, damaged, or missing despite me having already provided pics and other proof. What's their idea now that we forced them to buy new stuff to replace the junk? Move the junk over to another campus so they can use it as is?

WTF? My counterpart at that campus is pissed and rightfully so. All I could say to him was either don't accept delivery (and the boss is getting involved now) or find a place to hold the stuff until it can be hauled to the dump.

Fuuuuuuck..... I hate the politics layer within the IT world

I brought this up in a class I took years ago after I got out of the Army (Officer... Signal Corps). Man, the professor flipped his shit when I mentioned it, but I had to remind him ignoring it doesn't make it go away and only a POS would set his students up for failure.

He had THE lowest rating on RateMyProfessor.com at the time and that was the lowest of everyone nationwide. Dude lasted maybe two more years before he was let go for being an absolute dick.

I had these 2 guys, owned a huge cleaning company. They could never make a decision but wanted to go over options constantly.

Finally I just said, here it is, this is what we are doing, say yes.

That is how I handle anything that goes beyond 2 conversations now.

A great trick also is to come up with end of year goals and send it to everyone, including their/your management. They will want to check it off the list then.

Problem is that I am not in a position to do that and can only make forceful suggestions. The only reason I'm getting my new computer tables in the three labs is because I bitched so much and dropped dime on the heffalump so bad that she was about to damn near lose her job. Hell, I've only been waiting for a year since the purchase was approved, but somehow she can now get going and have the order due for shipment in less than 6 weeks????

I don’t understand anything in this thread but I know what the bold is about. I call it analysis paralysis.

I did a lot of work for a very wealthy man. And he’d want every option of every product. Red yellow blue. Small medium large. Horizontal vertical multi directional.
Then he would always want what’s not available.
“Sorry sir, red is not available in large vertical”
Then I’d spend countless hours finding a vendor who would custom manufacture.
And dammit, he’d have his large red vertical.
