This. We all know payoffs to players happens under the table. Player visits booster, comes back with a wad of cash. Player gets no show job at local business owned by a booster. That's already happening in secret, but now we want universities themselves to pay directly? Why not allow high schools to do the same thing. I know for a fact there are schools in Texas, including in my own little burg, that recruit players.

"Oh, Miss So-and-So, what will it take for you to bring little Johnny to our district to play? We can offer you a home to live in, no rent, we've got a job waiting for you, and other perks as well." Booster clubs take HS football seriously in Texas. Speaking as a taxpayer, though, I don't want to be taxed so my local HS can recruit players.

So no, I'm against formalized pay to play in collegiate or k-12. What I would support is allowing student athletes to make their own money from endorsements, etc. This basically brings the underground booster payoff system into the light, but it's not being paid directly by the universities. I get money is fungible, but taxpayer money funds universities, and even though alumni donate, too, it's still a bad look for the university itself to be paying.

Maybe that's the case for your conference, Anj. But over here in the SEC, we prioritize academic excellence when recruiting our football players.

That's a more credible claim to make when your team consistently sucks from season to season, which is PROOF my alma mater IS an academic school, except for, oddly enough, women's basketball.
