I was leaving the post office one day and held the door for an elderly lady who was entering. Her reply? I might be old, but I'm not helpless!

I said "You're welcome!" and laughed all the way to my car.

I've been in that situation - rarely - my response is: "A simple 'thank-you' will suffice", and I walk away. Rude old ****s.

Also not a corporate guy. One small corporation I worked for there was no doubt that I was the rebel.

There was an older lady grocery shopping, she had one crutch, and was toting a shopping cart. As luck would have it, she got in line behind me AND she only had maybe a half dozen items.

Me: Why don't you go on ahead?

OL: Oh, no thanks, I'm fine.

Me: I insist. [back my cart out of line]

OL: Oh. OK then.

I told her I'd hate to see what the other guy looked like, and she busted out laughing. Tension defused.

I've been on the reverse of that, me with just a few items, and had other people wave me ahead. I just say thanks. I've also seen that kind of thing become contagious, as multiple people in line with carts full of stuff evaluate the situation and let the person with a few items just move on through. That's the way it's supposed to be.

Elvis left the building long ago on that one my friend, the influx of brash, discourteous, loud, obnoxious and pushy northerners have destroyed the much-touted "Southern hospitality". When I hear a NY or NJ accent nearby anymore I just know the subsequent actions by those people will peg my "you're an @hole" meter...

I lived in Syracuse, NY for 11 years before I moved here to paradise. The locals tout it at the eastern-most midwest city. My Boston accent has this been replaced with more of a neutral midwest.

The obnoxious northerners tend to move to the larger cities. Just look for the blue colors on the voting map from the last presidential election. There's even an entire town set up for them: Cary: Concentrated Area of Relocated Yankees.

In contrast, I have embraced the lifestyle of the Southern gentleman. One of my best friends who grew up here still calls me a yankee, but admits that I'm more Southern than most natives.

anyway, I see this as a first world problem I don't have to worry about.

A few years ago there was a coordinated car theft at a high end restaurant in Atlanta. A guy pulled a gun on the holder of the keys, then a dozen or so guys took the keys and drove off with the cars.

I'm an old woman, and I would never say that to anyone. I say Thank you!

If I was you, I would have let go of that door handle like it was electrified. let her open it again; her not helpless self.

I still open doors for those less agile or footgifted than myself. Including women pushing strollers, older folks than myself, or anyone else who looks like they are juggling too much.

I live in a red neck area. The year around people are for the most part very conservative and rather decent.

Its normal for someone going through a door to hold it for the next person, even if that person is like 15 footsteps away. Its common for some one that you do not know to smile and say good morning, or have a good day.

Now when the flatlanders come here for their summer invasion their easy to spot. Hold the door for them and most just walk in make no attempt to hold the door or say thanks. Watch the way they drive, no doubt they own the road!

Funny as most of these clowns are liberal types, its easy to tell as they have biden or some other democrat sticker on their car. Also the majority come from NJ, Conn, NYC and way downstate areas!
