I did one time.....the raise put me right over the line to the next category letting me actually take home a little less $$ .
I told them thank you for the raise but could you please either give me a little more or take it back. They all laughed and did make the raise bigger to let me actually take home a little more than I was.

When I was planning to leave my job in Boston and find one in Syracuse, my boss tried to sell me on the idea that he'd pay to fly me in on Monday mornings and back to NY the following Fridays. That way I could spend every weekend with my fiance. "It's a good deal. You're not going to make the big bucks there like you are in Boston."

My new employer in NY paid me 22% more.

No. I took all the money they threw at me. I was getting out-of-cycle raises in a period where the company was cutting back on all spending and being very stingy with raises. I constantly got #1 performance reviews and large raises. I guess I was "lucky". It helped that I was so single-sourced they used to have meetings titled, "What happens if Tiki gets hit by a truck?" When I started showing up to work wearing a full coverage helmet and a sport bike in my parking spot, my boss's hair went three shades whiter. One day, I decided to start leaving every Friday at noon. Nobody said a ****ing word and I made it such a habit, the powers that be scheduled meetings avoiding Friday afternoons. I also implemented Hawaiian shirt Fridays. I started wearing a Hawaiian shirt every Friday as it was generally known to be a casual Friday. Secure building - customers couldn't see us unless we wanted them to. Before long, others in my department also started wearing Hawaiian shirts. It grew to other departments. Then it started spreading to the other floors in the building. Before you knew it, three quarters of the people in the building, including some top brass, were wearing Hawaiian shirts on Fridays.

Sometimes I miss working.

I turned down a Federal civil service promotion to a GS-14 at the IRS after an interview....

As I was answering questions, the interviewers asked if they could bring in staff to hear what I had to say about Software Development Life Cycles, mid-tier architecture, handling customer requirements creep, etc.. It turned into a training class. There were like 15 people in the room at the end furiously taking notes.

I got offered the job and turned it down, the whole outfit was freakin' clueless...

Twice. On both occasions, my employer (2 different ones) wanted me to take on the task of managing an additional department which would have required an amount of work that wasn't commensurate with the raise amount. In both cases, several months later I was offered a raise that was significantly (60%) more than the original offer. These were both safety and security technology start-ups.

1) Take-home pay can be controlled by how many dependents you claim during the year.

2) A higher marginal tax rate only applies to the dollars you make over your previous marginal rate.

3) Most people cannot predict what deductible expenses they will have for the current year -- which your tax rate is based on when your next tax return is calculated.

No. I never asked for one either.

Just when I turned in my intent to retire letter at 63. They threw some money at me to stay another year, I was not interested.

New Carrolton, MD? I've been there many times. I wasn't IRS, but I was Treasury and the IRS was one of my clients.

You are correct when you say they are clueless. Never saw so many morbidly obese black women sitting around not working in my life. Looked a bit like a feed lot and didn't smell much better. Took an elevator ride with one of the top dogs and he was telling me that there is absolutely nothing they can do about it because of the union.

I guess technically I turned down a couple raises. Been foreman a couple times on small jobs but did not like it so I refused the next couple times for bigger jobs when it was offered to me.

Forman's pay is normally a couple bucks per hour over journeyman and you get paid holidays, and on some jobs profit sharing!
