Has anyone here ever been into boxing?

Back in the 70's I saved up my money and bought a couple pairs of Everlast boxing gloves. Word quickly spread around the neighborhood and we soon had a daily smoker with a dozen or more kids participating.

It was fun while it lasted, knocking people down and getting knocked down was good macho fun, but I got tired of having a constant low level headache so we eventually pitched it in.

Any Gold Glovers here?

Nope. Did judo back in my tweens. I beat up everyone in my class so the instructor imported a ringer, an older, bigger kid from a more advanced class. I didn't know that I was supposed to kick his ass, so I basically let him win. That gave my Dad and I the message that I'd learned all that I could.

Are you sure it wasn't dance lessons? Why do you think you were there?

I was in the boxing club my freshman year in college. My last fight, I fought a guy who placed highly in the NCAA championships that year (read: I had no business being in the ring with him). I beat the shit out of that guy's hands with my face.

I was in wrestling when I was a teen. I was 95 pounds and beat everybody in my weight class, so the coach put me up against the two biggest guys in the class, who were 147 and 151 pounds. Tall, not fat. I beat them, too. I should have kept after it but was not motivated. I preferred flying my model airplanes and screwing around with my mini bike.

I went to Schuyler High in Albany NY. Its principal was Benn Becker. Mr Becker was also the Olympic boxing coach of many, that included Cassius Clay, the Sugar Rays and quite a few other fighters.

He ran a tough school and indeed uses his hands on problem kids. this was in the 60s and it worked in that era. (Best bet that school was the toughest high school north of NY City) One of his biggest rules no fighting on school grounds or your next fight was Mr Becker.

If you had a big enough problem you could talk with Mr Becker and he would take the two of you down to the gym alcove where a regulation boxing ring was.

You were allowed up to 3 rounds with super big gloves with Mr B as the ref and a gym instructor as the time keeper

I had two fights under those rules which I won and to be honest I know in a street fight I would have lost to one of those kids. As a younger kid I had two years of boxing at a local club and that gave me the advantage using boxing rules.

I have mentioned this years ago on here but too dam lazy to look for it!

I was good at wrestling but never went farther than HS gym class. The wrestling coach tried to recruit me but I didn't like the sport. Contact with a stinky guy was just awful. And my friends that were on the team were constantly trying to make weight. I had enough trouble keeping the weight on, eating enough not to get the low blood sugar shakes mid-morning.
