Me too ! I tried wind surfing in Cancun years ago and nearly got swept out to sea. The hotel staff working the beach concessions were napping (literally sleeping on a picnic table) when I got in trouble and were oblivious.

I was rescued by a small boat of Asian tourists setting off for a scuba dive. Of course, they all had to take videos to show their family back home the goofball Americano that screwed the pooch. Embarrassing - and the wife had to nearly kick the resort staffs' ass to get them motivated to look for me.

Never again trusted those beachfront activities...

I tried it once- never able to move more than a few feet. But I can sail a boat well.

Yes. The Dalles is well-known among windsurfers. I actually got to the Gorge during one of my many trips to Oregon. Didn't do any windsurfing there, but just had to see it.

When I taught college in Maryland, I lived on the Chesapeake Bay, and had brought my gear (minus boards) with me on the plane. Picked up a couple of used boards at a local shop, and sailed the Bay regularly.

Strange winds though. They cycle slowly from barely a force 4 up to just under a 5 and then back again. Also the Bay was populated by a lot of small jellyfish which caught me out first time out; after that I wore an "anti-jellyfish" tunic - not a wetsuit but a kindof one-piece overall that kept the buggers off you.

Idiots. They should have warned you about the golden rule "don't go out in an offshore wind". Surfers pray for offshore winds to hold the waves up; only very strong experienced (and desperate) windsurfers go out in them.

Something similar happened to me as a novice on the Red Sea during a trip to Israel. The shop guy saw me disappeariing towards Saudi Arabia and the North Pole, and came out on a "trainer" windsurfer - big board with a small sail, swapped with me and guided me back. Learned the hard way!
