I rode for about 18 years. First a 250cc dirt bike, then a 450cc scrambler; both drum brake bikes, well-used when I bought them. My third and last was a factory new, but a year old, '79 Kawasaki 650C. Triple disk brakes. I sold that in 1994.

The parking lot ankle injury was my only accident. If I can give any rider advice, it would be to learn to dodge trees and skid, stop on a dirt bike first.

Hmmmm, In '79 February, dead of winter, ice frozen ground with loader teeth lumps in the hard dirt.....I fell from Ex Phila Eagles Defensive Lineman's Bill Bergey's roof (24') that we were framing. Shattered both ankles, the trama traveled up my spine to my neck.....My pelvis bone was used to graft new heels, two golf ball sized donor pieces were cut out. To this day, I've suffered in pain walking, learned to live with it.

On a good note, during my 18 months collecting WC, I went to college, got two years of courses out of the way, in a wheelchair and gradually to crutches.

This is but one of my improvements to my artwork......

My first love. The bike not the chick. Laid her down gently twice with only a bruised ego. The chick got laid down more than twice.

Ahh yes, my lovely broken feet. After 20+ years in the military with Friday ruck marches, exercises/training so often that you wondered if you'd ever recover, ice hockey since age 11, karate and MMA from 18 on, my feet have more hard miles on them than Al Bundy's Dodge.

My service left me with severe planar fasciitis that I feel every day. It's so extreme that it eliminated me from ever doing law enforcement work again. I'll have random flare-ups that ensure that crutches are needed just to move around the house, and forget about doing anything that requires standing for longer than about 20-30 minutes. If I stand for longer than about 45 minutes at a time, I'm useless for about 2-3 days while my feet recover. Man even typing this makes me wonder how the military only gave me 10% disability for them. Hell, I'm on a first name basis with my podiatrist.

How do I care for them? Regular Epsom salt soaking, custom insoles, specialized footwear, and an intimate knowledge of my limitations.

Surprisingly I can walk as well as I do. Occasional reoccurring pain. All ten piglets are attached including the nails. The dogs are in pretty good shape.
Simple nail clips as needed and regular hygiene. Let’s go to work.
I, too, have broken both ankles. One as a kid in high school and one as an adult. And, in 1987, I broke all the metatarsals in my left foot straight across. Got struck by a falling I-beam on a construction site. Ended up in Fairfax hospital for three days for that one. All I do for my feet is wash them and clip the nails occasionally as needed.

Wow. That's a long ways. I know guys who've fallen from roofs (including my late father, wasn't really hurt) but not that far.

I guess you could consider yourself lucky.

I have to clean my chimney each December, one story up. Being old, I hang onto that ladder with a death grip. The scariest part is getting back onto the top of the ladder when I'm coming off the roof.

About 5 years ago the ladder blew down on me while I was up doing the chimney. I'm pretty isolated here, but luckily my neighbor heard me screaming when he got home from work; I was up there an hour or so yelling, and dusk was settling in. Temp was in 40s.

I take my phone with me now, and tie a rope to the ladder also.

My doctors office has in all examining rooms a sign that says If your a diabetic take off your shoes and socks. They always do a sole of the feet test to make sure you can feel the little wire test thing brushing your feet.

Mine has that sign too.

I was pre- in February (A1C was 5.9) got down into normal now by eliminating most carbs, bordering on a carnivore diet -- I'm now at 5.3.

I HAVE to take care of my feet. Type II diabetic.
Years ago, I got a small cut on my left foot that went septic.
I spent a long weekend in the hospital getting butt loads of IV antibiotics.
Docs said I was almost ready to lose it at the knee.

Good thing I was young! My life was short as it flashed!

Thing is in that brief moment I didn’t bend my knees and landed straight legged…. If only…..

And I’m still waiting for a signed football from Bergey….. probably afraid of SOLOMON Shapiro and Leon Esquire…..wonder if he ever knew….?

Ladders get anchored, I too have been trapped on a roof caused by high winds blowing them down…

Mine was nearly identical, just a bit smaller engine. Sixty-two HP was enough.

I knew how to carve the curves, but I mostly rode sanely. I quickly got the reputation among the girls in college that they could get a ride on a nice, quiet bike and not feel that they were going to die. This became my chic magnet.

This was exactly like mine, dark blue with gold striping.

I only wear shoes when required.
I rarely wear socks, even those I probably have 200+ pairs.

Let them breathe, clog shower drain with Skoal so they can soak a little.

If there's other peeps around, and/or you have your phone on you then it would be a minor inconvenience. If I was stuck on the roof overnight (no guarantee that morning would change anything) I probably wouldn't have made it, not dressed for that.

It's all woods here, can't see any houses, luckily my neighbor heard me screaming when he got out of his truck.

After all that happened, the next day, I realized that there was a way down where I probably could have gotten down safely.

No wind down in this hole unless it comes from the SE which is rare. And that's what it was doing that day, although just in puffs like always so I wasn't worried about it.

Only wear socks since retiring unless I'm going out. Heels are starting to become calloused. I don't worry much about it. They get washed when I shower and clipped when putting on my socks becomes problematic. Ain't got nobody to impress around here.

Probably already experienced the worst foot problem I'll have back when I was 13 years old. Got a fungus on the toes of my left foot after playing in a swamp. It put me on crutches and knocked me out of school for the last half of the 7'th grade, used a tutor. Interesting experience. Went to a doctor 50 miles away twice a week. He'd break this huge scab off that was encrusting my toes and drain the green snot beneath then shine a UV light on it for twenty minutes. There were also pills involved. The only reminder I have of this is a wavy nail on my big toe... Thought for sure I was a goner
