Default Roku

Any advice on how to get rid of the ads shown on the various apps? Something like an adblocker, but for the Roku vs. the computer?

I saw advice about the "Roku secret menu," followed the instructions on settings, but noticed no change in ad prevalence or duration. I see there's another suggestion to IP block a couple of IP addresses where the majority of the adverting comes from, but apparently my router can't do that, at least, I haven't seen any info on how to do it with my router, other than to buy a different router, then plug that into the internet provider's router, which seems stupid.

PiHole will block ads for every device on your network.

Suffer!

Normal ads don't bother me on free streaming: you need them to piss, get a snack, shoot the dog, etc.

However, in recent months Youtube has them plastered all over the place, inserting them right in the middle of someone talking, really stupid.

Looks complicated, and I'm afraid of screwing up the router and computer.

When I install another operating system, that will surely effect what I've got now, right?

The ads make youtube basically unwatchable at this point.

PiHole runs on a dedicated machine like a Raspberry Pi (hence the name), so no changes to any of your existing PCs.

Maybe you have a grandson who can help you set things up?

Looks like I have to buy a little motherboard? Some of their offerings come with more stuff, but it still looks like i have to plug it into my computer to accept the PiHole programming?

I used rumble for a good while; but I got sick of Dan Bongino, who I initially liked as a no-BS conservative commentator, touting his huge equity stake in the sire along with him pushing his books down your throat.

He's become another internet money grubber IMO.

What kind of router do you have?

All you need is the network address (most often 192.168.1.1), your admin logon and password. These days you can always find a menu via the GUI to do what you need....like blocking certain IPs.

I only listen to him on the radio on the way home from lunch. That's about all I can stand: He is either screaming, which gets old real quick, or mumbling to his sidekicks which you can't tell at first what is going on.

I'm always screaming back at him at the radio: "Will you take a ****ing handful of Valium before you go on air?"

His content is great, his delivery sucks ass; he should do something else for a living cuz radio ain't it for him -- although he is very successful at it apparently.

Its not for the faint of heart and you will be "buying into" administering a system using pi-hole; like everything there are advantages and disadvantages.

Its basically "trick-f*cking" your device or router to go to an INTRA-network (hence the 168 ip address) DNS resolver that will thread traffic through an ad-blocker scheme.

There is a limited number of OSs supported so you would prob need separate hardware or a virtual machine to run it if you want wholesale ad blocking on your home LAN.

If you aren't conversant with DNS tech and some arcane OSs I'd pass on it. There are pitfalls; e.g if the DNS resolution fails you won't be able to get to the web for troubleshooting help or a "fix". You'll have to "fallback" to the old configuration to get out of the pi-hole.

Not a new scheme, many client email span blockers loopback to a local embedded fake DNS server that will beat addresses against a "blocked list" to eliminate spam.

So here's a question....say I buy one of those Raspberry circuit boards and take it to my computer guy. I am assuming he can install the Pi-hole on it, what I need to get rid of the ads on Roku. Is that something I can then plug and play into my router as a "set and forget," or am I going to have future problems/issues?

If I can't do something "set and forget," I'll just suffer with the ads. Heck, I'd be happy to just lessen them a bit. I understand that's how those apps make their money.

You could prob do that and it'll work fine for a while and maybe a long while....but I'd have that computer guy on speed dial. Wouldn't cost that much to try it though.

Frankly, I've been simplifying my home LAN and house automation. F*cking Alexa has started broadcasting on its own at times, the audio ads have become pernicious and the RING doorbell is a piece of shit and won't work through my VPN and only half the time without it.

PiHole is basically zero-maintenance. I've been running it for several years now and have never once had to futz with it. Unless/until something fails on the computer it's running on you can forget all about it.
