It's not the window units we're talking about, it's the portables. Single hose units pull air from inside, across the condenser coils and vents outside. You're wasting the air you just cooled to the outside, and that negative air pressure inside the house will cause hot air to be drawn in elsewhere (e.g., from outside, the attic, etc). Dual hose units pull air from outside, across the condenser coils then out the other tube back outside.

This video can explain it better than I can:

I actually have that unit above in your video. I had 2 ton R22 unit fail that my wife wants replaced with a low profile compressor making the replacement ~$10k for a small apartment/bonus room. So I've got a single Midea Air unit cooling a 25x25 space no problems at all.

I understand how they work. OP was asking about window units not portable. Anyway, my son's actually works really well.

Any issues with amperage draw/tripped circuit breakers/outlet heating up? From what I gather, 12K btu is the upper limit of what is usually powered by 110, and I'm assuming most home circuit breakers other than for the AC units are 15 amp.

And is it fairly quiet, as advertised?

I looked at a mini split for my garage. I have an AC company acquaintance, he wasn’t super high on them but he probably wants to sell me a unit.

Think this through thoroughly, as in bad hoods they remove the ac unit to break-in.
Once they steal all you have, they take the ac unit with them to sell.

slewfoot can explain,,,

Mini split units are excellent. They are designed to do a room. Down in the islands (Caribbean) most homes have one in each room.
I’m going to install one in my man cave/office that’s attached to the garage. The garage will be fully insulated and finished so I can open the door between the garage and office and HVAC the garage as well if I want.

Agree 100%, I am looking to do the same. I was just referring to the brand. He said repair parts are not easy to source.

Mini splits are more efficient than central, I thinks just a stigma.

The new cartridge units eliminate the giant box hanging on the wall.

My mother and grandmother used them religiously. We had one when we lived in rural upstate NY, but Baby Doll didn't like to use it because bugs, pollen, etc.

Growing up dirt poor, this was standard, I used the poles at the end as chin-up bars.
And one day landed on my arse as it was rusted out.

The only thing I hate about this unit is it required a few screws into the frame of the window for the bracket.

I have not checked the amperage, but I've had no issues at all, and my Sense isn't screaming at me about a new power-sucking device, either. I will see if I can isolate the circuit and check the amperage later.

It's a pretty quiet unit on the inside. I can tell when it's running outside, but even when it is it's way quieter than the 2-ton compressor it's currently replacing.

The fan inside can oscillate and run at various speeds. The Wi-Fi on the unit works really well. I can easily tell Alexa to set temperatures and check on the room. I bought my unit refurbished for $249 from Amazon, and overall I'm very happy with it.

Back when I was about ten y/o....Dad got two window units.....

the house was same as today, except black slate roof......5204 Glenwood Rd. Bethesda Md......look it up.....

now that house wit 3 upstairs bedrooms and one bath, and two more 1/2 baths on main floor and basement.....it was hotter than HELL in summer, windoze open or not.....even the basement was damn near unlivable....

BUT the addition of the two bedroom a/c units chllled out amazingly overnight.....even in the large MBR my parents were in.....

SO one day I suggested to mom/dad to leave them on all day and night.....

and so doors upstairs open to the staircase, and windoze close elsewhere, including the basement.....I got home about 4pm that screwal day and the house was like a refridge walking in......down to about 72f.......at the front door.....

SO, it makes me wonder about any center hall colonial.....depending on size, obviously, what is matter with just 2-3 upstairs units, paint the roof WHITE, and freeze yourself OUT for cheep instead of going nutz with doing whole house....

Me too. Used it yesterday. I love the roughness of sun-dried towels. Lo 90's here....my laundry dried in about 2 hours. For free.
