In the lap of luxury, what is the fanciest vehicle you have been in for a ride?
I had to look it up, as I wasn't sure on the model, but it was a Rols Royce Phantom. Maybe a 2007 or 2008 model.
What got me thinking about this was the memory of the umbrellas built into storage in the rear doors. I thought it was pretty cool and looked up what kind of car it was. Like riding on a cloud, the car was the most luxurious car I've been in. The most sporty I've driven was possibly the Ferrari 458 Italia, driven a couple years later. Coincidentally, both unexpected experiences were in Michigan, which is the car mecca of the world. Two ends of the spectrum, but both were fancy cars. I cannot say I have been in anything so nice before, or since. How about your own experiences? |

In April 1972, my new wife and I headed out on my 750 Honda for Florida, a buddy of mine was with us on his 750. We were meeting another buddy who had rented the top half of a house in Daytona Beach, a block or two from the beach. His GF had been there but left before we got there.
The guy who owned the house was a Kanuck (as memory serves) probably in his 60s, was quite wealthy but just a "regular guy." He had a Rolls, and we all rode in it en route to his boat (nothing special) in which we cruised around the inland waterway. I have pix of my 21 year-old wife in a bikini in the boat somewhere. I should dig them up. She died in 2014. |

40s Rolls-Royce, can't remember the model. 90s Bentley was nice but not that nice.
Few other 40s cars were exquisite if I could remember the names. |

Some pickup trucks today are very nice. A far cry from the waffle patterned vinyl bench seats of the 1960s and 1970s trucks. Leather is everywhere, and other touch points rival the most luxurious brands.
An F250 Platinum is possibly a $100,000 truck, depending how it was optioned. |

Back in the '80's, '67 Ferrari 365 I put tires on. (hand-mounted knock-offs, a PITA). In the '90's, a brand new Rolls Royce whatever convertible that I did service work on. Drove like a 1940's car. Big and clunky and soft. When I was a small kid, I remember riding in my dad's friend's '60 or '61 Chrysler 300F or G convertible with the swivel seats and dual carbs. Also as a small kid, riding in the back seat of a friend of the family's brand new '64 Lincoln Continental. Black on black. More recently, a 1912 Packard indy car. Like riding on an elevated ladder. Scary and fast.

Seems like out of the gate, Rolls Royce and Bentley cars are tops. I'd hate to maintain one of them, or own one out of warranty. But based upon early responses, they are top of the heap. Pardon Me, Do You Have Some Grey Poupon? |

About 2015 I was looking for a 996 twin turbo; I visited a dealer and he also had a Ferrari F430 coupe on the lot. It was is his shop getting its engine-out, 10,000 mile scheduled maintenance . He was asking $80K. It was (and is) one of the best looking cars ever. I sat in it and for several minutes thought, I could do this…I’ve got the money…she’d be upset, for a little while, but…obviously I didn’t do it. Kind of wish I had since they’ve almost doubled in price.

I don't think they were doing those commercials in 1972.

My neighbor Rick had an 80's Rolls parked in his garage down in SC. I asked him about it many times- bring it up, I'd love to ride in it. He always had some excuse. I would have loved to buy it from him.
Then one day he told me that he sold it. For $30k. "I didn't know that you wanted it." I don't know if I did either, but it would have been nice to at least have the opportunity to make that decision. |
