Our local Riteaid is closing and the CVS is a dumpster fire. Don’t forget the “shrinkage”problem they are supposed to absorb.

The root of the problem is in basic economics. Free markets vs. politically-controlled markets.
With a fascist/socialized type of healthcare system, people have the concept that everything is "free," or nearly so. I just shake my head when I hear people bitch about a $20 "co-pay." That term didn't exist before a few decades ago. What do they think the actual doctor's bill is? We're paying it all, we just don't see the biggest part. Same for drugs. For most of us, most scripts are just a few bucks. Back to economics: Anything that is free, or perceived to be, will create an unlimited demand, but the supply is always limited -- especially when there are government-imposed price controls on them. You've got a sore finger? Go to the doctor. He may give you a script, pushed by Big Pharma. None of this will cost you much. If the doc visit was $200 out of your pocket, and the script was $50 -- would you still go to the doc or maybe wait a few days and see if it gets better? So what do governments (vs. the free market) do about it? There is only one thing government can do: ration the supply. Push testing out farther, push non-critical care out, and eventually push ALL care out farther, which would include mobbed emergency rooms in hospitals. Look at Britain and Canada, both with long-time socialized medicine. They ration care because they have no other option. Doc visits are free or just a nominal fee? Hey, let's go see what he thinks about my tummy ache. Get a script? Why not? It's only four bucks. SO NOW, FINALLY, the unlimited demand has extended to drug stores where the demand for cheap drugs is not being met by enough employees to fill them. It will not get better, it will only get worse as government stupidly continues to tweak things. When the end consumer is insulated from actual costs there is no feedback, no negative price signals to the supplier. Without that feedback, prices will rise above their true market value -- which is why medicals costs always rise higher than the inflation rate. My drug dealer is CVS. Their website, when looking at scripts, is a total mess and it just gets worse. And going there to pick something up, thanks to government, is as bad as going to the DMV. |

I use the Publix pharmacy for stuff my civilian docs prescribe or one time scripts, but exclusively use the VA system for everything else after I get all my scripts moved over to them.
Actually, it's the only part of the VA healthcare system that seems to work well. |

Hmmm...maybe I'll try the VA for meds. I'd sooner go to Tijuana for actual medical care before a VA hospital based on my experience with VA medical "care." |

With my civilian docs, I get the script filled locally and have them send the script and updated medical records to the VA, they review, and then it's sent to me in the mail once per month. Fairly easy process. The only thing they heavily scrutinize is pain meds, but I'm not worried since I'm very allergic to non-synthetic opiates. |

My drugs come to me in the mail. I seem to get a three moth supply every two months. I’ve got a years supply in my drug drawer.
More and more local retail is giving excuses to not shop there. I even get my wood grill fuel from Amazon now. |

You DO realize that drugs (most anyway) have expiration dates on them and some of them aren't that far in the future.

I think given the way our country is circling the drain, that having things stockpiled, especially meds, is a good thing. Just remember to use the FIFO accounting principle.....first in, first out. Use up the old meds first and put the newest acquired meds in safe storage. |

Didn't affect me today. I went to the Doc this morning for an ear infection, and by the time I got from her office to my house, I already had a text from CVS that my prescription was ready.

Thought about the VA, then I woke up in a sweat and realized the Tricare Select is much better. Yes I'll pay co payments and use Express Scripts for the meds.
Too many horror stories of VA Medical Careless to test the waters. I've seen too many botched diagnosis and deaths from incompetent doctors in the system. They seem to get protected as well. It is sad an illegal immigrant can get better medical treatment that a vet who fought for our country. |
