Educate me on gutter guards, please...
It's approaching the time of year again when I have to clean my gutters every week or so, I have some Bald Cypress trees near the house that lose their "leaves" (actually a dense, soft stuff that clogs gutters) in the Fall, and I'm sick and tired of having to clean the gutters.
I've read everything I can find on gutter guards, and I'm still confused; some people believe in them, others say they worthless. Anybody have an opinion and what brand to buy? |

k.
Gutterguards are nice their something some home owners get for their house. They stop leaves and sticks and pollen thingys and pine straw and other junk from falling into their gutters and making a sticky black blobby mess. It can get gross and then you have to get up there and shove a hose in there and wash it out. If I had a business selling gutterguards that would be fun and it would make me tons of money and rich. Which would be a good thing. I don't know where to buy gutterguards though so I might just not start that business. The end |

I’ll answer. We had new gutters with guards installed about 2 years ago. Don’t call those “commercials” on tv. A local guy installed ours. I know someone that called the guy on tv and she paid 5 times what we paid for a smaller house and she is still making monthly payments. J bought an attachment for the blower and cleans them off a few times a year from the ground, no climbing a ladder.

BRB. I’ll look for the receipt. They have helped keeping water away from the foundation and out of the basement.

72 feet across front of house and 72 feet across back. We bought some splash guards and those corrugated looking pipes that attach to the downspouts to help direct the water away from the house.

Subscribed, in the off chance there's a serious discussion. My trouble is mainly pine needles, which I am told will get through most gutter filter systems.
I did see some 4' screens on the Home Depot website that look like they snap on to existing standard gutters with no screws. I was thinking about trying them out. They also have some that require machine screws to affix to your existing gutter. |

I had gutters all around this house when I bought it, with a new shingle roof already installed ~27 sq.....I almost immediately knocked off about 2/3 of the gutters from the house proper, the ones remaining go across the 2 car garage, back about 8' to the front door and across the door to the left about 15' worth....now here is the trick, they typical ~5" gutter top width....and they typically have a metal corrugated downspout rather limited in size...say 3x4" or so...at most......well they clog up all the time right on the top.....screw THAT, I bought a couple elbows and some length of 4" plastic DWV and glued it up, and blew out the gutter opening, 2' roof overhang, so down/back to wall, down again, and out away from house so each spout has 3 90* bends.....not cleaned the gutters in over 20 years now.....
GOD I"m lazy...... |

One level. We have about 3/4 basement so it’s steep on part of it. J can stand on porch and manage to use blower. Sycamore tree and oak trees here. I’ll try to take a pic later. I have my grand today!

They fly through the air and come straight down. Many would then stick in the screen of the gutter guard.. Then shit would back up behind them or rot enough to go in the gutter.. At least for me things were worst with the guards we had installed. Note this was about mid 80s so things should be better now. My new house built in 2003 I used a good metal roof and no phucking gutters. I do have up a water diverter (4' long. on the roof that keeps it from going down on the steps. |

Lots of water diverters in use here in Floriduh too......but since I had lots of left over gutters from the tear downs, I just use them on the adjacent sheds and open ended so they splat on the concrete and drain straightaway in a few spots.....the roof slopes without gutters, 2' overhang, and they drain onto bushes,....free water then splatters on the grass......then I have to MOW.....

I told my wife that if I ever built another house I would have water lines coming out of attic into the gutters with high pressure nozzles that I could turn on to flush the gutters out when ever I wanted to....of course there would be valves in basement to drain for the winter. Depending on the gutters maybe have 2 in each gutter....between the drain valve and the lines being pex there should not be any problems.

Have 'em and love 'em.
I just take the leaf blower to the roof a couple of times in the fall and spring to clear the valleys and whatever accumulates on the gutters. They were on the house when I bought it so I don't know what they are or how much they cost. |

My workshop is under cedar, oak and pine and the gutters were constantly full of debris. I had Leaf Filter guards installed and would do again in a heartbeat.

I purchased the rolled screen at the local ACE hardware store and installed them in the gutters myself.
They work quite well for keeping the maple tree "twirlies" out of the rain gutter. About every other year I clear the pieces of sticks ( from the maple trees) out of the gutter screen. |
