I've not known a ship of that size to just free dock like that.

You could tell the thrusters were doing everything they could to keep it off of the dock

9 times out of 10 we would moor without tugs. They used to dent and scrape the hell out of the side of the ship. We did this without bow thrusters or Pods, just two variable pitched propellors.

That's the problem with modern cruise vessels....the are so tall they act like sails in a cross wind....too much freeboard makes them uncontrollable in circumstances like that. those bow/stern thrusters aren't going to do a damn thing against a wind like that. He should have waited for a few tugs to assist.

Good point. Some of those are what...10 to 12 stories above water with a "yuge" profile. Cross winds must be tons of fun

That flag was a blowin'.
My guess is that the captain wanted to save the money and attempt the landing himself, thinking he could cheat the wind.
It didn't work out as planned.
9 times out of 10 is doable in calm seas, but the tenth would have been this instance.
