But if you do it in order as written , it's 28.

2x4=8 adding 6 equals 14 multiplied by 2 equals 28.

That's operator precedence. The multiplication operator has higher precedence than the addition operator. A C program will give you the same thing.

here lies the problem... two different calculators, sequence entered in as written, and they give different results. One is not savy enough to know the rules of math.

You know these rules; ya can"t divide by zero... nor can you take the square root of a negative number. One of these rules deals with equations that have multiple - but different - operations. In this specific, one of those rules says that multiplication takes precedence over addition or subtraction.

In my example, you need to do the two multiplications first, then the addition of the two products last.

My main beef is with the calculators sold that ignore some of these known rules.

The way to get the correct answer to display on these rule'less calculators would be to multiply 2 times 4... Press = ; then press M+.

Next, multiply 2 times 6, then press = , then press M+ , then press MRCL... 20 will be displayed.
