EDIT: Also, I'm totally jealous of how nice this is turning out. My car, in comparison, is visually a shitbox.
Ive found that the trick to painting headers is to clean the fk out of the pipes/manifold...warm them, put the paint on in one thin coat, then one wet coat a couple minutes later. LEt it dry completely...then crank the engine...let it idle about 30 second...then let it cool. Then crank it..let it idle about a minute...then let it cool. Then crank it...run it about 1500 for a minute.....then let it cool, then drive normally.

I painted the manifolds on my 454 truck with VHT black header paint, did the above, and 6 months late,r still looks like the day I put it on.

People tend to want to go balls out immediately, and the paint cooks off, it has to slow cure in stages.

I painted the headers on the racing karts when we used to run on dirt ovals, I found that the slow cure allows the paint ot last a whole season except right at the head, I honestly think the EGT's we were running exceeded the 1200* rating of the paint I used...haha

Very strange Waco, why it burnt off.

Whats bad is, on the BBC, I didnt even clean the exhaust...I just painted it warm, and did the cure process as normal.

When my Flowtechs come in for the small block truck, they should come in bare, im planning to do the same ot them, after a wipe down with alcohol or mineral spirits. Might just bolt em on and burn em clean...but it sucks painting headers installed.

Red - did that exactly (it's very similar to the can instructions) and my red lasted a week. The black on the Focus lasted about 3 weeks.
You will definitely need the side mounting rails from your existing radiator and you'll need to get two packages of the nylon straps that poke through the fins of the radiator to mount the fans. The fans are generic and don't match the mounting holes. Additionally, you'll have to cut off your existing fan wiring harnesses and splice them onto the new fans. We don't have the harnesses off of the old fans, so we'll just have to splice the wires directly.

Is your daughter planning to AutoX this one? Any requirements for a roll cage of some type?

If so, wondering if you didn't want to tackle that while everything was out. I guess I could understand if you were just wanting to get it running and will worry about the cage later. But if you DO do it later, at least y'all know how to take it apart.

Looking forward to seeing her rollin' in this one!

Yes, she's definitely going to autocross it. Rollbars are not required for AutoX. If/when she goes road racing, she'll definitely need one. For now, she just wants to get it running.

Makes sense. For some reason, I thought AutoX required it, esp for convertibles.

Any update on fuel pressure? Need to prime the pump first?
Not sure how they're setup but I've had more than 1 pressure regulator take a dump right out of the box.

Maybe you put the filter on backwards.

We swapped the fuel pump. (installed the one from the '96) and also found a ground in the trunk behind the driver not attached. We now have fuel pressure. Gonna change the oil before any extended starting tests. No clue how much, if any is even in there right now.

Boris says it'll want to die without the intake attached, so I'll take her to get oil and coolant at lunchtime, and we'll connect up the intake and give it a try.

It's aliiiiive!!

Happy Birthday G.A.!!

Sounds good other than some valvetrain chatter that I suspect will quiet up with a little break-in. Be sure you're getting good pressure and circulation to the head.

It took a LOT to pull this off by today. 9 weeks in and we were able to start it on her birthday. We should be close to 100% and driving this weekend. She has to wait until Wednesday to call the DMV to schedule her appointment to get her license.

This build coincides with the Ninja Turtle movie that's coming out soon, hu?
I wonder if she can capitalize on that somehow.
Worst case scenario is getting sued for patent infringement...
