I have had escargot a number of times. Seems to be one of those dishes you rarely see anymore. Same thing with snapper soup

Yep. As a matter of fact, last time I had escargot was with some turtle soup on the side. Decades ago, in San Francisco. Both were delicious. Mostly because garlic and butter.

...On our Honeymoon in Aruba 51 years ago I told my wife for dinner that night, everything I order was going to be something I never had before.
I ordered escargot, turtle soup and frogs legs.....Trying new things doe not scare me. I had them that one time and will probably never have them again willingly.:funnier:

I was swinging round SE Asia on may way home from Nippon, ended up in Laos, as yet undiscovered the hordes of riff-raff out there today, and by luck was put up for free by a bunch of French teachers (French ex-colony), one of whom was Monique. We hit it off & she invited me to her parents' home in France when we all finally got back to Europe.
So I did, & found a warm welcome, and LOTS of food (boy how the French can eat). On the table one day were the dreaded snails, cooked in butter. I ate a couple, just to show the flag, but can't say they were particularly good or bad.
Never had the ****ing stuff since though. :funny:

I did but she didn't spell her name that way!
A long time ago, I worked at a restaurant chain in Canada. Had worked at four of their high-end steak houses over the years. One of the menu items was escargot. Cooked many orders, but never tried it. And never will.
I'd eat that
It was as good as it looks. :cert:
I have, and like others have said, they basically taste like the butter and garlic they are cooked in. I would eat them again if that is what the crowd wanted, but wouldn't order them for myself. :island14:

Had it quite a few times and enjoyed it every single time.
The best we had was on Grand Bahama Island . Also had it at Epcot in France and it was just okay.

For some reason my father loved them. Then, when I was about 7 or 8, a French chef working towards opening a restaurant in Orlando moved in across the street from us. He often invited neighbors to come try foods as he worked out his menu, and knowing my father loved them he cooked them often.
Years later he aged out and retired and his place closed, my father would lament not having them. On one of his trips to SoCal when I lived there I took him to La Dijionaise and he got his fill and was quite happy about it. I'm picking and don't like a lot of things, but have no issue with these little buttery bastards.

Escargot is an excuse for eating garlic and butter in the same way that golf is an excuse for walking around on a lawn.

An old friend I had in Long Island was into boating and had an all wood Egg Harbor. They would be on their boat almost every weekend with a lot of their boat friends. One woman was French and he told me that she had escargot shells and would go out early in the morning and collect slugs :willy:, cook them and serve them in the shells :wow:...like I said before I tried them but they are on a "no need to try again" list of mine. :puke:

I had them several times from a local seafood store. They were premade as delicious. Not cheap though.

Yes. We have a Belgium restaurant near us called Mannekin Pis (after the famous Brussels statue). They are also famous for their mussel pots. We go several times a year.

One has to wonder about the very first person to eat a snail and then convince others to.

I drink milk regularly but have to wonder about the first people that thought it would be a good idea to drink the white liquid coming out of a cow.
A lot of weird trial & error has gone on. :yesnod:

That's a gay test right there. If you don't eat raw oysters and others alike, you likely would be terrified of "The Predator."
After a few hours of dancing, it smells like rotten codfish.:funniest:

They are garden pests. Disgusting texture, as well.
Grew up in so. Cal. And these pests escaped from french kitchens, invaded , and grossed us out as food sources.

In the Realm of Escargot . . . .
We can Throw . . .
Oysters, Clams, and Cockles into the Discussion
They are all types of bivalves, a group of mollusks that have two shells hinged together.
They are all edible and found in saltwater, although clams can also be found in freshwater.
