View Full Version : Obama extends olive branch in gun control debate

The one thing Obama can't get a grasp on; is they don't like him no matter what he says or does. He can give the Republicans any and everything they want and they still wouldn't like him. As a matter of fact, whenever he agrees with them, they change their stance. I wouldn't be surprised if the GOP will be all for Gun Control by the end-of-the-day tomorrow. :yell:

He should get over it, he's a Black Man who beat them, and they will never get over that. :pain: :afrocool:

So stop it ... :banghead:

Two months after the shooting rampage in Tucson renewed a debate over gun violence, President Obama is still searching for a way to take on the issue without touching off a battle with the powerful gun-rights lobby.

Gun control advocates and some congressional Democrats are pushing for legislation that would require gun sellers, even those at gun shows, to conduct background checks and would toughen data-reporting requirements.

But administration officials have concluded that Obama would probably lose any legislative fight against the National Rifle Association. So, they are taking a different approach: Inviting the NRA to sit down for a chat.

Administration officials said Monday that the Justice Department will ask NRA officials to participate in closed-door meetings in the coming weeks to explore a path forward.

It is not clear whether the path will lead anywhere. Wayne LaPierre, the NRA’s executive vice president, rejected the idea. In an interview, he accused the White House of “trying to fog the issue until after the 2012 elections.”

Pointing to a dissenting vote cast by Obama Supreme Court appointee Sonia Sotomayor, who opposed the high court’s 2010 ruling affirming the right to bear arms, LaPierre asked: “Why should I sit down with a group of people who have spent their life fighting the Second Amendment?”

The administration’s olive branch, and LaPierre’s rejection of it, underscores the touchiness of gun politics, particularly for a Democratic president looking to win favor with pro-gun independent voters as he undertakes his reelection campaign.

The talks with the NRA would be part of a series of meetings with advocates on all sides, administration officials said. On Tuesday afternoon, top Justice aides will meet with gun control supporters.

This debate has been going on for decades, and it's because obama is black? Really?

Wow, If it was anybody but Chas I would be shocked that the race card got played in the first post...

For the record, I don't like Obama because of his socialist agenda...he just happens to be Black.

End of discussion.

What about the Japanese ? Are they socialists ?
They're entire society is about (protecting) it's people ... as an example, we've seen the govt. flood nuclear reactors with seawater which possibly saved perhaps a million people from instant death from particular radiation particulates ... this destroyed billions and billions of dollars of nuclear technology perhaps the best there is in the world ... rather protecting greed.

The Soviets (Chernobyl) had about zero Fail Safe systems and with crude cheap techology ... well, it was like the BP Gulf Oil disaster ...

How'bout the Irainians ? How many billions and billions do they spend just to protect themselves from attack ? How'bout all the other nuclear nations ?

Point being, you don't know what socialism is ... perhaps you're a moderate right-winger since you don't call Obama a communist/fascist ?

Obama doesn't matter, and I honestly do believe he isn't that dumb to start pushing gun control now, because at this point all he cares about is re-election likelihood.

If he does get re-elected, it would not surprise me one bit if this was the first thing he attacked in his 2nd term, because there is no third term, thus no repercussions for him.

All but a few states now issuing CCW, and people actively taking advantage of that privilege. He doesn't stand a chance in hell if he starts anything about it now, and he knows it.

The one in office that starts countering that, just may well be the one that triggers the next revolution. It need not be Obama, just anyone else equally misguided.

It's not about gun control or taking away your guns ... it's about changing the law to keep gun show arms dealers who only need to be certified as neo-nazi hillbilly-militias to sell weapons to the jared loughners so to go on mass-murder rampages because they hate the fact that it's socialist/communist/national socilaist fascist to force them to take shizophrenic meds ...

Are there no shootings where guns are outright prohibited? (ie; Chicago)

1. Gun dealers are required by law to perform background checks anytime they sell a firearm, including gun shows.

2. Loughner did not buy his gun at a gun show.

Just calling it the way I see it, maybe your vision is different than mine.

Then how can you explain when he give the GOP what they want, all of a sudden they have a different view of their own ideas.

Hummm ... interesting isn't it? :confused5:

As was pointed out above, background checks are already required. The two rifles I picked up at this past gun show both required that I go through a background check.

However, there will always be crazy people who, if they don't kill with guns, will instead kill with knives, poison, automobiles, explosives, or something else. Yes, even if all guns magically disappeared today.

Fun fact: mass murders were around before guns were invented.

Chas, what is it you perceive obama is giving the "republicans" that they are rejecting? And what "different view" are you talking about?

This story isn't about republicans, it's about the gun lobby. The gun lobby is not interested in compromising on their position. Not today, not yesterday, not tomorrow. That's what lobbyists do.

It’s beyond obvious the current system isn’t working as a standard EVERYWHERE in the US; this has been proven time and time again with undercover buyers. Just because your local system is working in your local area, doesn’t mean the System is working as a whole. Whenever there’s a hole in the System, people lives are in jeopardy, 911 has taught us that fact.

You are assuming there is such a thing as perfection, give it UP already....

meanwhile on my last flight back from AID in Wash DC last May, there are islamics handling the gate...in full dress, just to be PC about it.....don't think that shit went un noticed either.....

just sayin'.....:waiting:

and of all the guns the cartels are using in Mexico, just 17% come from the USA, and of those less than 1/2 are traceable to a illegal/straw man purchase....

the rest are from wherever, so all OUR gun laws are there useless in THAT battle.....

course I got MY solution, but it's not PC enough.....

matter of fact, it's not PC at ALL.....
