Solar on roofs in Florida is akin to chasing nickels with dimes. Why do it?

Because people are suckers, and/or bad at math.

Because some people will gladly spend money on something that is theirs, tangible...in effort to have 25 dollar electric bills.

Her house has been through a shitload of hurricanes in all that time - no damage.

The roof was replaced last year and last month all the electric was brought up to current code and new central A/C installed.
Truth.
I built homes very close to the beach with Lodge Pole 2x4’s and thermoply. Crappy ass aluminum windows. Stick frame roof with 2x6’s/2x8’s. Three tab elcheapo shingles. Vinyl siding. And maybe small H1.5 rafter clips.

After multiple hurricanes and regular banana winds they are still standing.

I blame the insurance companies for the fact that we are now required to build these homes like battleships.

My daughter who worked in mold remediation early in her career tuned me in to the first thing to look for in crappy, cheap construction without even leaving the car....exterior windows. The best homes have windows recessed 4-6 inches. The tract houses that so many northern refugees buy in Florida have flush windows basically puttied onto the stucco. A few years and a few hurricanes later they've got major leaks and mold issues.

Recently its worse, during the supply chain crisis when builders couldn't get standard windows sized like they needed - they installed off-sized windows and used "putty and paint to make it what it ain't"

I have not had to deal with that. I doubt that the peel & stick would come off without delaminating the plywood.
