Pro-Life Activist Sentenced to Nearly 5 Years in Prison for Abortion Clinic Blockade

Pro-life activist Lauren Handy has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison for leading a group of fellow activists to blockade a clinic that performs abortions.

In an opinion and memorandum issued on May 13, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly sentenced Ms. Handy to 57 months in prison (in practice lowered to 48 months due to time already served), plus three years of probation and a monetary fine.

After Ms. Handy is released from prison in 2028, she will have to submit to a mental health assessment and treatment program, and she will be prohibited from knowingly entering or coming within 1,000 feet of an abortion facility, per court documents.
Ms. Handy, and several other defendants, were convicted by a jury in August 2023 of federal civil rights offenses for blockading access to the Washington Surgi-Clinic on Oct. 22, 2020. Ms. Handy was convicted on two charges: conspiracy against rights and violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, more commonly known as the FACE Act.
An indictment alleged that Ms. Handy directed the actions of her fellow conspirators on that day, which included placing chairs to obstruct passage into the clinic’s treatment area and chaining and roping themselves together to block access.

“The law does not protect violent nor obstructive conduct, nor should it,” Judge Kollar-Kotelly, a Clinton appointee, said in court while handing down the sentence, per The Associated Press.

There's an equal protection under the law issue here. What happened to all those blm/antifa rioters that blockaded streets and actually attacked people? Don't recall any of them getting 5 years in prison, or even any arrested at all?

Look at the current crop of Hamas terror supporters taking over college campuses, blocking access to buildings, among other things. Any of them charged with federal felonies for that? No? Oh, OK. Seems equal to me.

If her blocking access in a building is worth 5 years, that only makes sense if blocking roads and highways is worth the same, or more. THAT is the problem here. Look at all these environmental whack jobs. I say whack jobs, you might say brave environmental justice warriors. Whatever. No 5 year federal imprisonment for those folks.

This isn't equal protection under the law, specifically guaranteed by our Constitution. It's "some animals are more equal than others," which comes from a different text.....a text that wasn't supposed to be an instruction manual.

FWIW, I actually support abortion. It's a war of attrition, and more communist/leftist women are killing their babies than conservative, pro-America women. Why do you think PP always locates in the shitty parts of town? They're going after poor, mostly Democrat voting women.

Well, those BLM/Antifa scum should have gotten prison time but unfortunately they managed to mostly fall through the cracks due to the sheer logistics of dealing with them. I’m hoping if they continue to act out they’ll eventually get what they deserve. But the fact they avoided real punishment doesn’t mean that everyone else is entitled to a free pass also.

This woman has long since worn out her welcome and has become a true burden on the criminal justice system and society in general. The fact she’s going to have to submit to mental health treatment shows she has some real issues and needs some professional help to straighten out her act. It looks like finally the system has woken up and said enough is enough.

Yes, that's exactly what equal treatment under the law means. **** over the Hamas protestors, the antifa/blm blocking streets and buildings, and if you don't want to do that, then don't do it to this woman. That's exactly the point. Same thing happening with Trump. Everyone else takes home docs from work, but only TRUMP gets hemmed up for it. Unequal treatment.

Throwing political dissidents into mental hospitals is a hallmark of totalitarian regimes. Not really something to be proud of. And here's the kicker.....if she really was dangerously mentally ill, you'd think she'd be ordered to go to a mental institution FIRST, because she's not lucid enough to stand trial. But that didn't happen here. It's just an extension of her punishment, a continuation of the struggle session, so she will say that 4 fingers is 5 fingers.

I think each and every one of those terrorist supporters that took over college campuses needs to be charged federally and given this exact sentence, including the mandatory mental health treatment, because I think they're all anti-American trash and are ****ed in the head. Well Bill, I try to not let things totally out of my control bother me, although I'm not always successful with that. As people here know I occasionally let shit piss me off and I get kinda wound up.
