Houston Deputy Shot & Killed

Deputies formed a perimeter around the site of the shooting, a Chevron service station along a curving stretch of road off TX 6, about 24 miles northwest of downtown.

Crime scene tape could be seen stretching around the station's gas pumps and a helicopter flew over the area as more and more police vehicles - some unmarked while others flashing lights - rushed to the scene.

Deputies held back reporters and curious onlookers and shouted at motorists to move out of the way and allow the police vehicles to pass.

Details were still very scarce as authorities began investigating the shooting. Officials with the Harris County Sheriff's Office said in a news statement they will soon be holding a media briefing at a church nearby.

According to KTRK, more than a dozen bullet casings littered the crime scene and that the deputy's body was still on the ground about two hours after the shooting apparently had taken place.

"He was pumping into his vehicle ... and the male suspect came up behind him and shot the deputy multiple times," Deputy Thomas Gilliland said.

Even after the deputy fell to the ground, the man continued firing shot after shot before fleeing in a red or maroon Ford Ranger.

A witness called 911. Deputies raced to the site of the shooting.

"EMS arrived on scene," said an emotional Gilliland. "Unfortunately, the deputy passed."

"We are actively searching for the suspect right now," he continued, describing the man as about 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall, wearing a white T-shirt and red shorts. "I can tell you with diligence and justice the suspect will be caught. And he will be brought to justice."

The deputy, whose identity has not been released, was a 10-year-veteran of the department.

Harris County sheriff's deputies, homicide investigators and officers from other agencies, including the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Houston Police Department, responded to the scene and helped search for the gunman.

"This is a very tough moment right now for the Harris County Sheriff's Office," Gilliland said, his voice quavering. "Keep us in your prayers and in your thoughts."

The shooting comes a week after a Harris County jailer died during a confrontation with an inmate and at a time of heightened friction between the public and law enforcement.

He wasn't "shot" he was executed. Just disgusting, three of my in law- siblings are cops ones been shot, this hits too close to home.

Darren Goforth, husband, father of two, veteran of the force for 10 years. Executed at a gas station after filling up his car....he'd just finished investigating an accident scene, so at this time it does not appear to be even remotely provoked.

Maybe I'm counter to some but I think if a person executes an officer, the shooter gives up all rights to a fair trial and immediately is executed when found. Imo, that would deter many. The rest would get what they deserve.

This happens a lot of the time already. I have a suspicion that the team that was forming to comb the woods looking for my brother in laws shooter was prepared to do something similar

I'm pretty pissed he coward gave up before they could find him.

Yes and no. I'm sure his comfort will not be a concern for some. If it was me, I'd give zero fcuks about whether he needed an extra blanket, he had a more dangerous cell mate, or he had a tooth ache. Meh, one chooses to live far outside right and wrong and shit gets real.

Recently I heard on the news where one of the cult members labeled a person (who corrected a "black lives matter" statement - claiming it should be "all lives matter") ... as a racist.
