Auto parts stores today are simply fast food for your car.

our local 'ORLY'S?' has the best guys in it around here. If I absolutely HAVE to go to Auto Zone or worse yet Advance Auto, I better know where to find what I am looking for and where to find it. I dont even bother to ask them where stuff is anymore.

I Asked what difference it made. he told me that he could only put the amount of oil in the motor that his computer told him to put.
Then I went home and got my '78 Celica and took it back up there just to see them try to figure out the VIN number again.
Friend needed tires for his S10 pickup.....Walmart said no go because the truck came with 16" wheels and has 15" mag wheels on it....

so went to the local tire shop and put it on another CC.....

Geeeze. No winning with you, I guess.
Not really bitching - it wasn't annoying or anything like that. I just noticed that people who know cars are a dying breed.

When I went to look for the part he started helping some other customers. He was a nice kid. Just doesn't know the first thing about cars.

Usually OReally?'s is pretty good here. Austin's only speed shop is about 25 miles away, closed weekends and are famous for not answering the phone and zero customer service. They know cars - but they also know they are the only game in town.

Summit Racing for the win. But when I need something on a saturday or sunday - off to parts hell I go.

It always pisses me off when I go into a restaurant and the hostess can't tell me all the ingredients and utensils I would need to prepare faux-filet fum with confit of shallots, fleur de thyme, and a red wine bone marrow sauce.

Had the exact same thing happen buying an oil filter for the race car.

The stupid son of a bitch simply could NOT walk back and grab the filter number that I gave him without typing it into the computer.

But hey, I'm sure he could point me in the direction of that LED light up fart pipe for my Honda that I've always wanted so it's all good.

NAPA is about the only place that I know of where it can be reasonably assumed that MOST (far from all) of the time the guys will have at least a slight clue as to what you are talking about.

No doubt about it, but cars seem to be getting harder to work on as well.

On my 94 Silverado, I've done all kinds of work myself. If I don't know how to do something, I watch a few videos on YouTube and I'm good to go. When you open the hood, there is room to work and you can see what you need to do.

When you open the hood of a modern car, it's full of plastic covers and they have 10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound bag. You know what needs to be done, but unless you have tiny hands and a dozen specialty tools, you're screwed.

Modern cars are throw away items. In 50 years you won't see guys looking to restore a 2013 Chevy Malibu. I don't even see guys wanting to restore the modern Camaro's, Mustangs, etc...

The older cars are just cooler and were built to last. When something breaks on a new one, you throw it away and get another one.

however I remember when the '94s were new and people were bitching because they were so hard to work on. I will also say that the '80s are harder to work on than the '90s because of all the vacuum stuff.

I don't for 1 second expect the guy behind the counter to know each and every random part on every car out there but I do expect them to know at least the basics... like for instance not handing me a radiator hose and asking if that will work when I ask if they have 1/2" fuel line (yea, that happened at Autozone not long ago).

It's no different than walking into a paint store and expecting them to know the difference between matte and gloss.

My local Auto Zone ( which has folks who know a thing or two about vehicles. Two of the girls who work there know their stuff and are easy on the eyes ) is good to deal with. They also have all the oil filters on a wall rack with the book right there.

I wasn't pissed off. I was amazed. A collector gasket is a very basic thing. It's not like I asked for a distributor pack for a 1999 Saab or some obscure shit.

Our local Advance isn't the best and O'Reily's isn't far behind them. I waited for 20 minutes to get a part because the person working the counter kept taking phone calls and answering questions instead of looking up the part number I gave them and getting the part. I would have walked out and went to Advance but they were the only one within 25 miles with the part I needed.
I called the district manager and when the manager of the store called back, surprise surprise surprise, it was the same air head who was waiting on me.

O'Reily's also has a bad problem of finding the wrong part for you.

I go through this routine with AllState insurance every spring, when I re-issue insurance on our '79 Honda.
