Default Ford Pickup Guys, Step In

What do you guys thing of this for just a plow truck?
It seems like a great deal, depending on the drive train work and brakes, etc, that may be needed.
How is the engine and that particular year?
This thing is right around the corner from me, so I left a message with the guy to call me.

Im a GM guy, but i know fords...

Great platform, shitbox engine...mediocre trans, manual hubs, electronic 4X4 actuator,

For the price, id already own it...if its rust free and runs right, but...I wouldnt want to try and make a living with it...

Down here, that clean, those miles, if no rust...that truck would sell for over 7000 bucks...

I like how there is no close up picture to tell how bad it is.

I hate rust...I despise it. My 95 K2500 Silverado, has a spot of rust out on both cab corners and it sickens me to look at it, and I know its a pain in the ass to fix. At least with that truck, a new bed, would fix it...

Let's see...rust...a shitty engine and transmission...every nut and bolt likely rust-seized.... What could go wrong...?

In opposition to all the "the V10 is shiite" talk; I've enjoyed the hell out of mine and know several folks that have put 300k+ on these early Tritons.
They run tight bearing tolerances and utilize high crankcase pressure to lubricate but can really go the distance if cared for properly.

I have virtually the same truck.
'99 F350 V10 4x4 auto

The spark plug issue has typically been fixed on most of these earlier Triton engines although mine never was and I've never had any issues with it.

I bought it 4 years ago with 99k on the odo and it now has 155k and I have done nothing but basic maintenance. The trans is still running perfectly.
It has been an outstanding truck.

Negatives with this platform:

Horrible mileage 12-14 highway (although I still get 12 towing my C5/trailer to the track)

Manual hubs (can get auto hubs but they are a weak link and often freeze in the Winter rendering them useless and you in a fit of rage)

Rough suspension particularly with the reg cab. My theory is that the spring rates were set up around the extra/crew cab (adds another 800+ lbs)
When I put a half ton in the rear it rides like a Caddy.

Typical Ford front end/alignment issues

For just a plow truck, this could be an excellent truck. Just watch the trannies in any used plow trucks.
Most guys beat the fark out of them.

Feel free to shoot me a pm with any other questions. I've learned my way around this platform.
Scott

This truck is literally less than a mile from where I live, so I went and looked at it.
The body, from the doors forward is perfect. The tailgate is perfect. The interior is perfect and is all power.
As I suspected, the rear wheel wells are totally roached and the bottom behind the doors is starting to rust. This is typical for this region.
I just want a plow truck to sit here and be ready for snow. The only other times that I'd use it, would be trips to lumber yards or scrap yards.
I just have to take it for a test beat now to see how the thing runs and how the frame is, because for what I need it for, it's priced very nicely.

Just be sure that the plow is removable and not rusted on. Do people in your area just leave the plow on year-round?

Not that it matters.... even a rusty plow will outlast an old truck like that.

Ya, the spark plug issue is a biggie, but by this time, I would think that he would have had that issue and it would be fixed by now. I'll ask him about the tranny and the heads, and once I drive it, I'll have a better handle on how it is.
As far as the ride, my last ¾ ton Chevy rode the same way. It always rode like a dream with a lot of weight in it.
Man, I want a pick up agaiin.... Time to meet this dude.

I had a 1999 CK5000 with a 7½' Western on it, so I know my way around the plow pretty well. I know what to look for there, but I will certainly ask him.

I hear ya man.

Like Scott said though, that issue had been ironed out by that year though.
I will be asking the owner, for sure.
