Woodworking / Construction mofos
I need to put up some outdoor hogwire material. Its going to be on the top deck of the dock I put in at my parents' house.
4' by 50' welded galvanized PVC coated It's going to be mounted by driving staples into 2X4 material. I found some galvanized 1 1/4" U-shaped big galvanized staples at Home Depot that will require hammering in each one individually. If there is a stainless steel staple and power stapler available in this sort of durability rating it would make the job much easier, and Faster! Either electric or pneumatic. Is the 1 1/4" galvanized staple overkill? Could a smaller one work? The only stainless staples I could find are of the sort that you would use to staple a homemade "Lost Dog" sign onto a utility pole. Definitely not strong enough for installing a security fence. |

you could tie the fencing to the posts with galvanized wire. take about 12", wrap around, twist. wash, rinse, repeat.
or even some insulated copper wire, it won't rust, several colors available. |

Looking for some other method that would be more secure, not move around as much.
It's decorative and on a pretty big-dollar project. I don't want the screen material to get loose and bow out over time... I'd rather it be nice and tight, flat over time. This is for the 42" upper railing that goes around the top deck, and along both sides of the stairs. |

I think your best bet will be using hand driven staples if easy is the priority.
I have a great collection of pneumatic staplers, pin nailes etc but they may create a bow where the fastener meets the wire fencing. Then you have to hammer them in by hand which could loosen up the original shot. If durability is priority, then you could use a product from Big Heel that is aluminum and coated torx screws that will have better adhesion over time and wind or load strain. https://bigheelfasteners.com/fasteners/ What kind of PT are you using to frame it to or is it already in place? It's not in place yet, but I was planning to nail the big 1 1/4" galvanized (or stainless) staples into a 2X4 stringer on top and bottom, and into the 4X4 vertical posts which are about 5-6 feet apart.
Any powered stapler would be welcome to cut the time (I'm paying helpers by the hour) and effort, so long as the staples would be big enough. Those wimpy little 1/4" stainless staples are useless for this project. |

It's actually going to look pretty good when it's all trimmed out.
I saw it at a state park and liked it enough to abandon my plan of using 3/16 stainless braided wire spaced 4" apart to meet code. This is 10% the cost and looks great. |

Ya, right !
A thicker mesh would solve your issue. With this, just staple it, trim it., and you're done. A thinner gauge mesh would need a "stretcher jig" made in order for it to be stretched tight enough to staple. Even then you'd have to staple it on an angle at the corner of each square, so as not to let the thing have any give. |

They almost always pull loose over time. Fasteners like Big Heel are much more solid although there are alternate ways of doing it as shown in some of the pics. That requires sandwiching the wire between the ballisters and using trim to conceal fasteners at the posts. Feel free to shoot me a pic of the area as it is and what you're hoping to do. I'd be glad to run it past my buddy who is a old timer at dock building. I've been swinging hammers for 25+ years but this guy is great for all things on and around the dock. Scott

See if Home Depot has a power stapler for rent.

Here's where it's going. Upper deck all around and down both sides of the stairs.
Looks like I finally won the argument about not putting the railing on the ramp going down to the dock from shore. Those 4X4's are coming down. |

Ya, with those long spans, a thicker mil mesh is required imo.

Hmmm.
I hadn't considered the gauge and how well it will work with my project. It's only $50 a roll and as of right now, it's still in a form I can return it. I'll try to be careful with it when I unroll it and see what it looks like on the posts. |

My neighbor and I built a 6' fence around my back yard at my former house using 4X4 posts, 2X4 upper and lower stringers and hog wire. We hand hammered the galvanized staples, and I don't remember it being especially labor intensive. We built about 100' of fencing in a couple of 6-8 hour days, which included digging the post holes by hand and setting them in concrete. Stretching the hog wire taught over an 8' span was accomplished with a pry bar. It's still stretched tight after about ten years.
Biggest problem we had was one of the posts warped quite a bit after we built the fence. We just left it there and it still stands. Seriously, you sound a lot like me. Too much effort put into planning and designing, then when you finally build it you say wow, that was easy. Should have just gone out there and done it months ago. What happened to me is I watched my neighbor build his and he made it look easy because it was. So we just continued it over to my yard. |

Why didn't you want railing on the steps?

I do.
I don't want railing on the ramp leading down from the land to the lowest level of the dock. The ramp is what Molly is lying on in the photo. Makes it too hard carrying stuff down there. Tables, chairs, sheds, hot tubs, skis, paddles, etc. |

And as much as it pains me to agree with a damn Yankee; I have to agree with Jeff on the heavy gauge mesh. It looks a hell of a lot better and is just tougher all the way around. Some loop clamps would secure it well. You can look into conduit hardware for different fastening hardware. |
