That Lockheed needs all that cargo space to haul around the aircrew's balls.

I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it. It can carry almost a million pounds of cargo, and to be airborne on a runway that short is almost unbelievable!

Didn't look like it was going fast enough for takeoff.

Or that the runway was long enough.

Great job

It would be more impressive if they could rig it with a Jet Assisted Take Off (JATO). Saw one at an air show on a C-130 as in the attached video and it was very impressive to see it in person.

Saw the same thing years ago and the same thought came to my mind.

Wonder if they've ever tried JATO on a C5...

Those things are so huge, they look slow as hell, but they are haulin'. Most have been re-engined and don't even really sound like that anymore. In basic training you knew what a C5 sounded like the first day you were there, and always knew when one was around as they did depot repair on them at Kelly AFB, right next door to Lackland.

Shame if they don't have that characteristic sound anymore...

MSSS is listed as a 6,000 and a 7.000 FT. Runway.
So, maybe not so bad.

Rode one, fully loaded. Dover - Thule. (1981)

Didn't think we'd EVER leave the ground. Seemed we used 100% of the runway.

Flew one back from Ramstein to Dover once. Slowest flight ever. Got to sleep a couple hours, but still had 5+ hours after waking up. They didn't load a box meal for me, so I went around bumming other peoples unwanted stuff. Nothing but one engine in the cargo area.

Ramstein, now that's a good place to visit/be. Once upon a time back in the mid-90s at Ramstein, someone was completing a yard inventory. A yard inventory is all the stuff stored outside that's in-transit including HHG, House Hold Goods, aka folks that are moving stuff. The fella completing the inventory walked by one pallet and became scared. He immediately goes inside and soon the bomb squad is called. The bomb squad shows up along with plenty of other folks. One thing led to another and the pallet was shot with a shotgun. I can't remember if it was one of those robots or some guy with huge brass ones. Afterwards, the folks started checking the pallet and found an alarm clock. The alarm clock was one of those older ones that "tick".
