The reading of the Constitution
U.S. Constitution used as political football
Today Editorial: U.S. Constitution used as political football | masslive.com In our nation, where no one is above the law, and no one below it, the Constitution, the foundational establishment of the rule of law, applies equally to all. Consequently, the Constitution belongs to no individual, no group, no political party. While this should seem obvious, the lesson clearly needs to be reviewed by some who ought to know better. Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives are planning a showy reading of the entire Constitution soon after the new Congress convenes this week. Whatever their public claims, what they are doing, really, is throwing a bone to the tea partiers, who believe that their reading of the Constitution is the only one that matters. They seem to think, if the document is read aloud on the floor of the House, all non-believers will finally see the light. They should be careful what they wish for. The Constitution limits the powers of the federal government, but it does so while leaving broad room for interpretation. Congress can provide for the general welfare, regulate interstate commerce. There’s room in those two clauses alone for a couple centuries-worth of debate. Republicans are fixated on a new rule requiring that every piece of proposed legislation cite the section of the Constitution that would allow it. No problem. Many can begin like this: “Because the Constitution grants Congress the authority to provide for the general welfare of the United States . . .” Others, of course, can cite the commerce clause or separate provisions of our founding document. They might even point out, in a historical footnote, perhaps, that the Constitution, itself a work of great compromise, belongs to no individual, no party, no ideology. |

The Drama has already started; the GOP goal has always been one thing, to put President Obama in his place, and try to bring Government back to normal as they know it. The absolute last thing the GOP wants is, change. As a matter of fact; if they could encapsulate 2001 through 2009, and rerun those years like Groundhog Day, they would be in heaven.

The Democrats have been using the Constitution as their toilet paper for the past 100 years.

Ok ... the reading of the Constitution has started ... let's see how long it takes for the GOP doofus-wacko Goodlatt, who has never read it, doesn't know what's in it and is doing so merely to re-interpret it (historic amendments are illegal because reich-wing wackos say so) ...
