Despite Vietnam and the Libery, my dad looks at his time in the navy fondly. He does have a lot of good stories about travel and experiences and friends he made. He just doesn’t talk much about Vietnam or the Liberty.

Next time he’s out, I’m hoping to take him to visit the Midway.
I always wonder what it must be for a mom. As volunteers, we all knew what we were getting into. No big deal, right? I know mom was proud, but pretty sure she had that mom gene that just stood strong.

I was shocked.

Early in the 1940s Congress enacted the Sullivan Law following the death of five Sullivan brothers from Des Moines, Iowa. They were on the same ship when it was sunk in the Pacific. The law provided that members of an immediate family would not be placed together in harm's way.

I read that book about the attack on the Liberty. As I recall, the day of the attack the weather was CAVU and the ship was flying the American flag. Seems the attack was intentional and it was swept under the rug.

I don’t think they were all deployed at the same time. They also had two other brothers that didn’t serve. Not quite sure why or how they were not drafted.

I’m not sure what my dad’s older brother did in the navy. But I known his younger brother was a door gunner. He was the one that was drafted. He never did quite recover from his time in Vietnam. It haunted him all his life. He eventually took him own life.

Speaking from my own experience, you just have to let go and know/hope that they will be safe. You worry, of course. But you just have to have faith that they will be safe and they will be back. It’s all you can do.

I can speak to this. I was 8 months pregnant when Sadam invaded.

Mr.owc6 was sent out on one of the first planes. You pray, you do, you labor (3 Oct), you do, you pray a lotttttttt. you do, and you do some more.

I was fortunate to get him back. No one knew then how this would play out.
