Default The Dead Zone: Rundown Philadelphia Row Home Honored With Funeral

Rundown Philadelphia Row Home Honored With Funeral

PHILADELPHIA May 31, 2014

A funeral has been held in Philadelphia for a rundown row house seen as a symbol of urban blight.

Neighbors gathered Saturday in the impoverished Mantua (MAN'-shew-uh) section for the send-off. The row home was draped in floral wreaths for the occasion and feted with gospel music and eulogies.

Organizers randomly chose the building for a cultural project called "Funeral for a Home."

The idea is to recognize the neighborhood's history in a city where hundreds of homes are torn down each year.

Some believe the service could be cathartic for longtime Mantua residents hoping to see the area reborn.

The developer who bought the house plans to build affordable housing on the site.

Most people don't appreciate what they don't work hard for.

True. And the crazy thing is many of those Section 8 recipients could use their entitlement money to break the cycle a lot faster than those who don't get government assistance if they really wanted to.

Imagine how much more you could contribute to your personal savings account with reduced rent, no money to spend on groceries, utility assistance and health insurance premiums.

But you'd rather sit on your lazy behind and balk and let someone else float the note? That's damned shameful!

Best view of Philadelphia is the one in your rear view mirror.
Lived in Pa for the first 46 years of my life and spent a fair amount of time in Philly. A few nice areas but overall not a place I would want to be

They don't call it Philthydumpia for nothing. They should repeat this for most of the rest of the city:
