I tried to get my grandpa on that so he could see the memorial. Sadly, he isn't healthy enough to make the trip.

The really sad thing is, he hasn't flown in a plane since the war and then only once. He joined the Navy in 1943 at the age of 17. Went by train to California for basic, hopped on ship in San Fran and saw the world from there. Made everything from the landings in North Africa, Sicily and Normandy to bringing POW's home from Nazi Germany. Literally saw the world and only flew in a plane once in his life when his father got sick in early 1945 when the Red Cross got him home. His father died the day after he got home, they buried him a day later and he hopped a train bound for Boston where his ship was docked and loaded for a trip back to Liverpool in three days. He made it.

I was sitting in B Concourse of BWI yesterday afternoon waiting for my flight to STL when I heard clapping coming from further down the concourse. It was an honor flight coming through. Everyone stood up and applauded them as they came by. Some were in wheel chairs or used walkers. There were about fourty of them

My boss, a Viet Nam Vet, went on the honor flight with his dad in the summer of 2010. He said they had medical assistance for those who needed it.

Thats true - a doctor and a nurse are part of the volunteer escorts from DFW, but sometimes their health is just not good enough to make the trip.
