Default The Sunday Afternoon Puzzle!

It's that time again! Grab a pencil and a beer and give it your best shot! No feckin' Googling!

1. Jethro and Tull landed jobs at a self-service gas station in Minnesota. Since it was Winter, they were glad they didn't have to pump gas outside. The gas station was high-tech; there were cameras that displayed the rear end of each car at the pumps on monitors inside the store.

Eventually Jethro and Tull got bored with their jobs, so to pass the time they started betting on which cars pulled up to the pump on the wrong side; that is, with the fuel door of the car not facing the pump. Jethro called it correctly more than 90% of the time; Tull got it right only 50% of the time since he was just guessing.

How do you explain Jethros's ability? Remember: The cameras show only the rear of the car; they do not show the side of the car pulling up to the pump.

2. A man has six gold chains, each with 5 links. He wants to make them into one continuous, circular, closed chain. He takes the chains to a jeweler to get a price for the work. The jeweler says, "It'll cost $1 for every link I have to open and close. 6 chains--$6." Can it be done cheaper by the same jeweler?

3. The government pays tree farmers a specific fee for each row of 4 trees that they plant. One enterprising farmer came up with a way of planting 5 rows of 4 trees each using only 10 trees. How did he do it?

4. There are 2 telephone posts an unknown distance apart. Each pole is 100-feet tall. You have a rope that is 150-feet long. You attach one end of the rope to the top of one pole, and the other end to the top of the other pole. The sag in the rope is called a catenary, from the Latin word for chain.

The question is: How far apart are the poles if the bottom of the catenary is exactly 25-feet off the ground?

5. A ship is docked in the harbor. Over the side of the ship hangs a rope ladder with rungs a foot apart. The tide rises at the rate of 9 inches per hour. At the end of 6 hours, how much rope will still remain above water, assuming that 9 feet were above the water when the tide began to rise?

6. Which SPF sunscreen would be appropriate for these young women?:

#2 - 5 links opened and closed.

set aside 5 chain segments, open links on 6th segment, and join 2 segments with each link opened and closed.

Couldn't you just open all 5 links of one segment to join it all together? Is this the same as what you're saying?

There's a more accurate method.

Gas filler door is on the opposite side of where the exhaust pipe is.

Damn, you're good! Yep, on cars with only one tailpipe, the gas filler door is on the opposite side of the car 99% of the time. [Did you Google?]

Nope. As a racer, it makes perfect sense. Then again, after being a car nut for nearly 30 years, it's pretty easy to spot that pattern over time. Also, in the case of dual exhaust cars, the door is usually on the driver's side for convenience.

#3 - plant them in an X with the extra tree on one of the "arms" of the X

Code:

Okay, I see the confusion. The trees must have 5 rows of 4 trees each. Four separate rows. Four trees in each row. Does that help?

5 rows of 4, correct? 10 trees total

otherwise, you could plant 10 trees in one line and have 7 'rows' of 4 all total.
