Twin Geeks: Nevada Twins Are Co-Valedictorians at High School
Nevada Twins Are Co-Valedictorians at High School
MINDEN, Nev. June 2, 2014 Identical twin sisters have achieved an identical distinction at a northern Nevada high school: They're co-valedictorians. Gabby and Maria Munoz-Robles received the honor by each racking up 4.54 grade point averages at Douglas High School in Minden, about 40 miles south of Reno. The sisters both plan to attend Notre Dame in the fall and major in biomedical engineering. But the university is not allowing them to live in the same dormitory. The sisters told the Record-Courier of Gardnerville that they eventually want to attend graduate school and conduct cancer and arthritis research together. Both sisters have been involved in track, cross country and band at Douglas High. It's the first time in the school's history that twins have been co-valedictorians. |

I read this story and instantly got pissed off... not because of anything these young ladies did, but because of my wonderful past.
I came from a small school. 50 people in my class to be exact. We were on a base 4.0 scale. 4.0 was the max, period. At the beginning of senior year, twin sisters transferred to our school. At that point, I had gotten exactly 1 B in my life which put me at a 3.93 or something of the sort. They came from a school with a different grading scale and had > 4.0 GPAs. Keep in mind that both had multiple grades that were below an A. Rather than normalize the grades to the 4.0 scale, they just put them both at 4.0 and called it a day. We all got As through senior year (with them in all lower level classes) and I ended up 3rd in my class behind twin valedictorians. I don't care much about the title of valedictorian but if you do the math, being 3rd in a class of 50 meant that I was all of a sudden out of the top 5% and therefore not eligable for a good number of scholarships. Nope... I'm not bitter. Not at all. |
