A buddy of mine lost a shit ton of weight by simply lifting weights and cutting all cokes outta his diet (he was addicted to Dr pepper)

Sure it would, but he's starting in the right place, his diet. To lose fat you need to burn more than you take in. You can't out train a bad diet. Most people fail miserably at losing weight because they go to the gym, dick around on the elliptical for 20 min and do some curls in the mirror. They don't make any lasting changes to the way they eat, and end up failing.

Well, when you think about it...let's say you get a Super Big Gulp of Dr. Pepper from 7-11. That's 44ozs. A 12oz can of DP has about 130 calories and you're drinking about 4 cans, so that's over 500 calories. Not to mention that HFCS metabolizes into fat when it hits your bloodstream. A double whammy.

I almost always drink diet drinks or water.

umm its soda Joe not soft drinks

I hardly eat any fast food... hell i mostly eat chicken, turkey, steak and pork with some milk or protein bars and drinks.
