You could not be more wrong. There are tracks out there that are decades old. Some wagon tracks are still visible after 150 years.
Off road driving is a very real and very expensive problem for the National Park Service.

Sounds like two bad edges to me. Crowding and damage.

Next time the spot gets a good thunderstorm, they are gone, I bet. Pictures look like a spot that turns to mud when wet and then dries out and cracks up.

OK, I stand corrected. I admit I was both cavalier and wrong in my earlier comment. I didn't know it was that big a deal. I do now.

Two men driving in Death Valley National Park on July 4 got lost and illegally drove off-road, the US National Park Service alleges, sending one man to the hospital with heat-related illness.

Charges and fines are pending, NPS said in a news release Tuesday.

“Death Valley is an awe-inspiring place that demands our utmost respect and preparedness,” Superintendent Mike Reynolds said in a statement. “We urge visitors to exercise caution and adhere to park rules. Don’t drive off established roads; this damages the environment and can turn deadly.”

The pair were navigating by GPS and took a wrong turn in the park, NPS said in the release. After several hours of driving back and forth along a gravel road and becoming worried about running out of gas, they decided around midnight to try to drive directly across the salt flat.

The men’s car got stuck in the mud nearly a mile off the road. The pair walked about another mile to paved Badwater Road, where they walked an additional 12 miles (19 kilometers) north, the Park Service said.

Around 3 a.m., the two split up. One man was picked up around 8 a.m. by other visitors and driven to Furnace Creek to call for help.

The lowest temperature that night was 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celsius), NPS said.

The family who picked him up drove back and found the second man and took him to Shoshone, California, NPS said. He was transported by ambulance to Desert View Hospital in Pahrump, Nevada, with symptoms of heat-related illness.

A) Decent chance of ending up in shallow grave for cumulative forum infractions and disobeying directives

B) Possibility of spending the day with everyone's most favoritist mod

Other considerations: seems very resistant to disturbing the ground of the National Park

Conclusion: Worth the risk. Sign me up!

So California experts....is Hurricane Hilary going to wash out those wagon wheel tracks that have been there for 150 years? They're talking about this one rain event being ~ 275% of the yearly annual rainfall there. Seems like a lot.

I've never met someone so concerned about a state he doesn't live in, and comes from a state that has the worst weather, most Tornadoes, Hurricanes, bugs, and is the most desolate state in the country.

You're confusing me with a CA hater. I don't hate CA. I hate some of the politicians that come from CA, but hey, I hate some of the Texas politicians, too. As far as interest in the weather, it should go without saying that I hope y'all are going to be OK. As you pointed out, my area has known its share of weather disasters.

And as someone who has experienced their share of extreme weather, it's a general interest topic for me how other areas cope with, and are effected by it.
As an example, there was extensive discussion of Super Storm Sandy (not NAV, the storm on the East Coast.) The effects of what will be a tropical storm, on a desert I think is interesting.

Not meaning to offend you.

You haven't offended me. But a big disappointment is going to happen for the Media when this is just a small storm that may drop an inch of water. It never rains here in August so we welcome rain to keep the mountains and hills wet against brush fires.
