Had a very nice phone conversation with Gary yesterday.
Age, health, (forced) retirement, no income...Yeah, reality is hitting him. The expense of providing this place has become a burden, and whether it should be or not, it currently IS a significant expense and that's what he's seeking relief from, very understandable, and IMO, not a difficult problem to solve.

The more we talked, the more I became aware of his ulterior motive, which is leaving this place to me. I'm still not certain I want to take on that responsibility, but it does seem to be his plan.
As you've probably read, he just refused a $1000 offer, for basically no other reason than that offer wasn't from me. Yeah, I did call him an idiot for rejecting that. I felt Sea Six presented the ideal scenario and I advised Gary to accept that offer as soon as I heard of it, but no...<sigh>
Seriously, I didn't want to take on this role and put everything in my name, and can't comfortably afford it myself either (without donations or other sources of income), but shit, here I am.

The overall takeaway from our talk is no matter what, we simply will NOT allow this place to die. The problems we face are not insurmountable, we can make this place affordable to us (and likely take it a step further and generate some income). I don't anticipate anything changing much from what it has been the past 8 years. We're not going to Dale you nor will there be some idiotic "ask a question" box covering half the page.

Anyways, What's probably going to happen in the next few weeks is this:
I'm going to assume control of everything here. We are going to port this site to cheaper hosting, SOON, before the end of this month, just to stop the bleeding. Though the resources are more than sufficient and quite reliable, our current arrangement is ridiculously expensive compared to modern alternatives. The bulk of the expense being billed here is bandwidth and yesterday I was informed GB is currently paying a LOT more each month to serve a mere 50gb/mo than he was paying to deliver 100gb/mo a few years ago. That's crazy. It needs to stop, we can solve that problem. Expect some downtime when this host transition happens, but it will be planned for off-peak times and announced in advance, if you happen upon a time of outage rest assured it won't be the death of this forum.

And to aid me during this time of transition, please welcome Dixievet as our new administrator here. Getting him into this position was actually the plan a long time ago, to fill in the void after IC's departure. What can I say, I'm ****ing lazy, it never happened, but now was the time to get him on board. Rob has proven super-reliable over the years, he knows all this shit, he's better qualified than I am to handle all this. I just need him on this side of the board and am very grateful he accepted.
