This is probably the #1 opportunity from my perspective, too. I should be able to figure out my tax liability with my W2 and a simple spreadsheet. Needing a CPA or TurboTax and still not feeling like you're clear on what you should owe (or not owe!) is a major problem. Get rid of the social engineering bulls**t that doesn't contribute to a more productive society. No f**king hybrid car deductions. Keep a deduction for raising children, i.e., we don't want to be Japan, but limit the number. Get rid of filing jointly, separately, etc. Everyone has a simple, one-page tax form. Get rid of the income credit bulls**t. You don't get out more than you put in.

Lots of good ideas so far. Well, except for mandatory military service.

The US military could not handle, nor does it want, such an influx of untrained personnel. However, the infrastructure of this country needs an enormous amount of work in repairing roads, bridges, rail lines, etc. If a person can't physically perform or has serious conscientious objector beliefs they should be put into a modern version of the Civilian Conservation Corps that ran from 1933 to 1942. Personnel in this CCC would be tasked with the same things their predecessors were: build roads, bridges, and national/state parks. They could be used to build dikes in the lower Mississippi River region and maintain the vitality of the Interstate Highway system.

worst case, get a broom and shovel and trash can and make the place look nice. start at one end of an interstate, work toward the other end. camp in the RV along the way with your work mates.

Mandatory 10 years in federal prison for anyone who hires an illegal alien. This would require a simple, user friendly federal system for all employers to verify citizenship or immigration status for all new hires. The illegals would be gone in a matter of weeks.

Repeal and replace Obamacare. We have known alternative plans that will give us near universal coverage, At least a 50% reduction in cost of HC and it will maintain the quality of HC.

We don't have an immigration problem. We have a means tested entitlement problem. We are paying people to not do the jobs the illegals are doing.

It's time to get the American born deadbeats off thier ass's and into the marketplace. Watch how fast the illegals leave once Americans are told they are going to starve to death if they don't start producing.

I have always thought the same as Dixie. 2-4 years mandatory service but not in the true military unless they elect to do so. They go through a generalized 4 week basic training then for the next 2 years they work for the country (NOT THE GOVERNMENT) doing good samaritan work with the homeless, helping to clean up and rebuild neighborhoods, helping the elderly with shopping, laundry cleaning all free of charge. They will pull a government paycheck while doing this, say the same as an E3 in the armed forces. Then they will get discounts on higher education, they will understand that they are NOT little snowflakes and the country working TOGETHER is in our best intrests.

Just a fantasy, but you know what I'd like to see happen? Teachers that are retired or exiting armed forces members. They can extend their time by becoming teachers.
