Default SCOTUS Justice Kagan reports for Jury Duty

Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan called for jury duty.

Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan called for jury duty - Chicago Sun-Times

WASHINGTON – You might expect to see a Supreme Court justice doing their duty in court.

Likely not as a juror, though.

That’s the situation Associate Justice Elena Kagan found herself in Thurday morning in Washington, D.C., according to various media reports.

While she was not chosen and was released later in the afternoon - apparently without collecting her $4 transit stipend - she did make time to chat with some of her fellow prospective jurors.

I saw a guy tell the defense lawyer "I don't like you. nothing personal, but I just don't" during the jury selection process. the lawyer turns to the judge & says "Your Honor, you may excuse this man."

You might all have guessed I am no Kagan fan, but this is no story. She was called, presumably at random, and showed up, as she was required to. Any Supreme Court justice would have done the same.

Newsworthy? I guess. Political, religious or controversial? Not really.

It does underscore one point though: the importance of civic duty, the importance of showing up for jury duty.

I'd rather see jury duty threads about people that actually show up and don't actively try to get out of serving. You'd think that on a political forum, posters would be glad to serve, even if it is inconvenient. When will you ever have more power to see that the right thing is done than when you are a juror?

Actually, this "Paulie" has actually served on a jury. It was a DWI case years ago (short version, we let the guy go free).

I also got called twice in the same week for jury service, once at the county level, and once at the city level. Inconvenient, yes, but I showed up prepared to serve if called.

Chalk it up as the price of freedom. With rights comes responsibility.

And keep in mind, this is coming from a libertarian, who doesn't really believe in compulsory service to the state.

Your right to a fair and impartial jury trial is dependent on the responsibility of others to show up for jury duty, and vice versa.
