Now I know how the settlers felt...WW
What a Saturday I had, the electric went out about 8:00 yesterday morning because of the heavy snow we got and it stayed off for the last 24 hours. They said that having the leaves still on the trees is what caused the branches to break taking out the power lines. It didn't help that the temp yesterday was 28 degrees and last night (Hell night) got down to 22 degrees..We did ok , reverting back to the old days of cooking on a camp stove ( Coleman) and setting around trying to keep warm with heavy heavy clothes on.. Thank God the house didn't get down below 45 degrees so no frozen pipes..This does not make me look forward to the rest of the winter.....WW.

Last winter we had a similar situation but the power was out for a week (all electric house). We were going around the house in insulated underwear under our pants and with winter jackets on. Had to break into our emergency rations store and then restock it later. Fortunately, we had some chemical food heaters (water activated) so at least we had warm food. When the power came back on the temperature in the center of the house was 33 degrees.

Generator and 25 gallons of stabilized gasoline is a very good idea. We've got a 10 hp 6000 watt unit and a smaller 3000 as we get a lot of wind in the spring that can easily knock out the power for a day. They're dirt cheap these days, and they will keep the lights on, the food cold, and even keep the TV running. And don't forget to plug in any heat tape on pipes.
A cord (3 cords for you northern folks) of seasoned firewood in the back yard is a good idea too. Close off just the living room and the fireplace will keep it warm enough to sleep comfortably. |

Definition of "Tree" to a Canadian: Tall, white cylindrical vertical object with horizontal and diagonal offshoots. All are the same shape, and unlike their green cousins in the south, they are all white. |

I think it's more like the season premier for the next installment of "As the season turns". I think I remember some abuse during the summer so there'll be no kitty pitty from this owl.

I DO seem to remember some abused heaped up on us southern dwellers during the summer months now that you mention it. I feel that perhaps the pendulum is swinging in the opposite direction at the moment.
