I understand the BOTTLED water sells for $4. Smart move, real smart.

When bottled water ran out, Gillette Stadium charged fans $4.50 for tap water

The Boston Globe
September 25, 2017

The New England Patriots found themselves in hot water this Sunday after fans complained that they were asked to pay $4.50 for tap water at Gillette Stadium.

Workers at Gillette Stadium had prepared for hot September day — temperatures hit 86 degrees in Foxborough — by doubling their inventory of water bottles. However, the demand far exceeded what they were able to hold in their concession stands and was almost four times the inventory they would have had for an average game.

As different concession stands ran out of water bottles throughout the course of the day, fans asked for cups of tap water instead. Gillette concession stands don’t have the smaller complimentary water cups you may find at other restaurants, so concessionaires resorted to selling tap water in soda cups for $4.50.

Greed knows no bounds.

At least they didn’t sell stale peanuts from a defunct airline (redskins), or expired beer from the prior soccer World Cup (redskins again)

The cup costs $4.50, no matter what the vendor puts in it. That's how retail works. Same with the $4 bottle of water. The cost to the vendor on that 16.9 oz bottle is $0.10 or less. Pure profit. Same with the drink cups. The cost of each cup is just a few pennies, and the contents cost even less. However, in the retail world, the vendor has to attach a price, and the price for that cup is $4.50. Deal with it.

BTW, I'd piss and moan too if I was charged $4.50 for a cup of warm tap water.

I guess I'd have more sympathy if the stadium security didn't strip search you looking for food and drink when you go in. TSA pat downs don't hold a candle to stadium pat downs.

However draconian it may be, you know what it is when you go. Don't like it, don't go.

Even if it's a tax-payer funded stadium; bitching to the city council is not going to be very effective.
You gotta have the press on your side. And if you are a Republican, good luck with that.

Does the cost of the cup change per liquid? Nope.

Every venue is different. If the cup has "Coke" plastered on the side, the vendor is not putting beer in that cup.

When I was younger, we would chug beer out in the parking lot before going into a game. The sad thing is now, you have to chug water to stave off dehydration before you walk in, unless you want to go broke trying to stay hydrated.

Also, are there no drinking fountains in most arenas? If I was faced with paying $ 4.50 for a cup of warm tap water, I'd cup my hands and drink out of the faucet in the bathroom sink.

NHMS allows coolers and food.Know first hand that is the right policy to have. The sun in the upper stands is brutal.

What should I bring?

Be sure to review the First Timer Checklist for items that we suggest you bring. It's important to take note of our cooler policy. Unlike most venues that restrict carry-in food and drinks, we do not. We allow coolers that are 14" or less in dimension to be carried in to the grandstands. Coolers may contain food & drinks (definitely pack water), so long as there are no glass containers.
First Timer FAQ | Trip Planner | NHMS

A couple of years ago we did the Fenway Park tour and they were setting up for a concert and they were boosting all the food and drink prices by at least two dollars more.

The S.F. Giants allow you to bring in bottled water. Coolers have to be soft sided, and their size is limited to 16"X16"X8" I don't know about food. The food there is so good I never thought about bringing my own. Now that I think about it, I've seen people buy peanuts from sidewalk vendors and carry them in.

edit: A little googling tells me food can be brought in but must be in a clear plastic bag. Backpacks and grocery bags are also okay.
