For home D, I use a full size 9mm, or a shotgun, depending on what's closer at the time.
I can shoot my full size 9mm very quickly and accurately, as opposed to my LC-9 . I carry the LC-9 though. That's more of a close quarters gun.
P-94 DC for my home defense.

walking into Cabales I had 4 handguns on my list... none in stock. their display cases nearly bare.

Am at Rual King currently buying the S&W M&P 2.0 in 9mm.

But they are completely out of 9mm ammo.

Crazy !

For ammo check out ammoseek!

S&W 2.0 is a good choice!

I waited 1hr 45 min for my turn. Found out the S&W M&P 2.0 they had in stock was the sub-compact style; I wanted the compact size. They didn't have any. No restocking date.

I walked out with nothing in hand

The locally owned non big box gun store where I got my TS12 seems to be fully stocked on weapons. Ammo is in short supply but he has a full display of firearms.

I think I found one, the S&W M&P 2.0 compact 11691.
https://deguns.vteximg.com.br/arquiv...82426281730000

This is .40; I went with this mainly because all local gun shops are completely out of 9mm ammo... but had some .45 and S&W .40 ammo on the shelves.

We'll see; it's going to be a mailorder type purchase... shipped to a nearby FFL.

If your heart is set on it, go for it, but I wouldn’t avoid the 9mm because of a temporary 9mm shortage. Over the long run, 9mm is going to be more plentiful and cheaper than .40 S&W will ever be. If there was one caliber I could do without, it would be .40 S&W. I love my 9mm and my .45 ACP, but .40 is just meh...

That’s a blessing in disguise.. I rarely carry a .40 S&W any more. I don’t really like the snappy recoil and I’m not particularly recoil sensitive. I do know my qualification scores are better with the 9mm and .45 ACP. The .40 S&W just has a snappiness to it that makes follow up shots slower.

So the OP is getting too old for 10mm?

Is that the basis of this thread?

Crazy days these are!

I have both an XD-40 in full size and a Walther PPQ 9mm smaller size. I agree with everything said about the 40 being a bit of a handful if you need to use it quickly and accurately. Kind of my Gen Macarthur gun Never had a .45, so I can't compare. Wife has a hard time racking the XD, so that's why I got the PPQ. The PPQ is a dream to shoot. I do my own reloads to keep costs as low as possible, and in these times I'm happy I have supplies.

I thought about looking for a weapon in CA where I'm currently working since I leave all my stuff in CO. I ran into the same thing as you. Fire sale must have happened a couple months ago and I missed the boat.

Good luck. Find a reliable 9mm if you can.

I hear ya loud & clear. But can't seem to deal with the situation of buying a new gun... but no ammo to load. It would be like buying a new car, but no gasoline available.

I've matured from having the "big dick" handgun. My .44 mag was a blast to shoot (and so is my 10mm Glock 20); but for home defense I now want something more controllable.

So why not just get a drop in .40 caliber barrel for your Glock 20?

40 was a solution to a problem that didn't exist. 9mm is the choice here.

We have a bunch of 9MM coming in. Both the wife and I shoot it. Also got a lot of .308 in route. We ordered Monday and we check the UPS website, it is on the truck today. Normally thats about 3PM here for delivery.

Mike you would be just fine with either caliber for what you will be using it for. I personally like the .40 S&W. Others have other preferences (and dislikes). I will also mention the fact that I would have complete confidence if I had to carry a 9mm.

As to a particular firearm I recommend you get the one you shoot most accurately. If it will be a concealed carry weapon, it also needs to be one you are willing to carry often.

The Glock model 20 is physically too large for my wife to shoot, so conversion is not an option in this specific. I have an ideal occasion coming up later this month... to give the 20 to someone that will love it's big size.

OK; just got order confirmation for a S&W M&P 9mm 2.0 EZ:
https://www.smith-wesson.com/firearm...o-thumb-safety

from Rual King. 10-14 days till ship; their RK Gun division is swamped.

# 12437 w/o safety.

My wife has the previous gen M&P Shield in 9mm and loves the size, the way it shoots, and pretty much everything about it.
