My rule is if I can't afford my own, I probably don't need it. I don't have a lot of tools but when I need something I go get it. Why make enemies borrowing stuff...
Although I've seen the occasional MILF I'd like to borrow even tho I KNOW I can't afford it |

i was raised that if you do borrow something....that you are to return it asap after you are through using it and it is to be returned in better condition than it was when you borrowed it... for the record i rarely borrow anything .....except food products when i am cooking ....which i repay doubled....

I hardly ever borrow tools as I have a good amount and only from a couple people and I return them promptly, cleaned up and if I damage/loose something I make it good. On the other hand I only let a select few borrow tools (see bolded above) The list is about 7 people long and two of those are my kids. Two (Not my kids)can borrow anything I have and a couple are restricted to certain hand tools only. The kids need some tools I come with the tools and use them! Having a welder, cutting torches, portable generator, midsized Diesel tractor, pipe threading tools, chain saws and other specialty items I tend to be on the protective side! |

No, I can't. I should have said, "If you know my name, I'll think about it." I always hate loaning tools because I keep my tools looking brand new. I clean them after I use them if they get dirty or dusty. I've had a friend borrow some things and I had to spend about an hour cleaning it after he returned it. As far as borrowing tools, I try to avoid it. If I need it, I go buy it in most cases. I did have a buddy who let me borrow his hammer drill to remove some tile. After I was done, I cleaned the tool to look better than I got it and returned it with a $50 gift card. Most of the people that know me know better than to ask. |

Gary;
I'm so sorry about all that happening to a nice guy. There's some great advice being given: Quote:

I loaned my chop-saw to a trusted co-worker. Upon returning it... he told me had the blade resharpened. |

Guys, I have a friend who would borrow stuff from me and return it ruined or broken. He even managed to ruin an 8-pound sledge hammer (left it in a bucket of old paint and rain water outside for a month...)
The last straw was when he borrowed my pressure washer and, despite my careful usage instructions, broke the hose. Then he refused to buy me a replacement because "it was defective." After that he asked to borrow something and I just gave him hell. I wrote down a list of all the shit he'd borrowed and never returned or returned broken. Then I wrote down the approximate address of Lowes and told him that's where to find that item he wants. He was properly shamed and I hear from others now that he actually returns stuff that he borrows. Tough love is what is needed in these cases. |

Then we have my father-in-law, who can borrow stuff from me whenever he wants. Whatever he borrows is returned in better shape than it was to start with, and promptly. I even let him keep my pressure washer in his garage. I use it rarely and it just takes up space in my garage. Plus he has an old beater pickup I can borrow any time I want, which is about once every five years.

I loaned a neighbor my 300 cf Argon tank, FULL. About a month later, I needed it back but he was out of town so I borrowed my son's Argon tank. A year went by, I asked for my tank back. He stated that it was HIS tank. Found out that he took the tank to refill and they put in under his name. Now he does have a slight mental (memory) issue and has otherwise been a good friend. We still bother from each other but this one still bugs the crap out of me. |

Man, I'd get that tank back after a nice little sit-down with Mr. I Don't Remember Shit. Unless you simply don't care, in which case he's won. |

Tanks have a deposit on them, (which aint a whole lot). I dont think its a manner of winning or losing, he just forgot and thinks its his. We still use each other stuff when needed, this has been the only issue so far in 30 some years. And yes, I have the tank receipt so at least I know that I'm not the crazy one. |
