Cheapest commuter vehicle
While I have no job yet, considering where the majority of my interviews have been, i think it's at least reasonable to discuss the probability that i might be working 35 miles from my home, of mostly highway miles. My truck sees 20mpg highway, and 15 around town on diesel....which was fine when driving mixed highway/city for roughly 20 miles. Considering all opperating costs including maintenance and depreciation. What is the best highway commuting vehicle available? The diesels biggest advantage was/is depreciation mileage wasnt a huge factor in the value of the truck, which is why it has been our road trip vehicle. So whats out there?
Dont bother suggesting a prius or smaller cars i, value my life, and need a longer wheelbase for greater stability on the highway, not to mention better accident protection. |

I've been driving an '01 Monte Carlo SS to work, and it gets 30mpg on the highway.

I really not sure, Im thinking a VW jetta tdi makes a lot of sense, considering it's 500+ mile fuel range...but it may be a bit too small. and repair costs scare the crap out of me.
I think the real solution is to plan on moving into town, but that wont happen over night, and my poor dogs would lose their yard. |

Got a nice little DeLorean I'll set you up with.
Best thing about it is, you'll never have to worry about being late. |

I'm not sure tho, would i be able to go back in time to make it work, or would i just be stuck in the 80's, and therefore no chance to ever be late?

Geico now owns a slightly damaged 2010 Jaguar XF. Very safe vehicle. I bet you could get a great deal on that.

little math might be needed.
figure out your current cost per mile at some assumed stable gas price. then if you got a different vehicle, figure out you net purchase cost on that and what your new cost per mile will be. if you are out of pocket from buying your new vehicle, then figure out how many miles you will need to drive at the hopefully lower cost per mile to break even. if it's over 40k, i'd pass. |

Some will disagree, but if your current transportation gets 20 mpg highway, you'll need to get something with 30+ highway mileage to make much difference in the cost. The difference between a car that gets 20 MPG and one that gets 30 MPG amounts to $518 per year (assuming 15,000 miles of driving annually and a fuel cost of $2.07).
