Default "What a Beautiful Name" Theresa's birthday testimony

Celebrating my 48 birthday today! Last year around this time was not looking good for me at all. I watched my appetite go away, my weight drop dramatically and unimaginable emotional distress on my family.

I didn’t know it at the time, but my kidneys were failing. I could not stand to look at myself in the mirror. I knew it was an attack from the enemy.

Lupus reared its ugly head with a vengeance! While hospitalized, I underwent three rounds of dialysis, two surgeries and three blood transfusions all in one week.

Julian asked the doctors at one point why they were treating it so aggressively since I was unable to eat or rest for more than three days in a row due to the surgeries and other procedures.

My hubby just wanted them to stop. My doctor said it was because the disease attacked so aggressively. My children, Chynna and Julian, Jr. had their friends, teachers, and classmates praying for their momma.

The power of praying kids! They also had our fur baby Bruce adding his prayers in the form or mournful howls to the mix. But my faith and the faith of all of the pray warriors, combined with reading my Bible and listening to Christian music, prevailed.

Looking back, all I can say is, “thank you, Jesus that I am still among the living.” I still have my beautiful family, and that’s why the song “What a Beautiful Name” by Hillsong Worship endeared itself to me because the name of Jesus got me where I am today.

I’ve been off work for more than a year and yes, it’s been a struggle for my family. But my doctor released me to go back to teach this fall.

I thank Jesus for my wonderful husband and life partner. Through it all, he stood beside me when I would just cry and say, “I don’t like the way I look.” Julian held me in his arms, looked in my eyes and said to me with a smile on his face, “you are still beautiful to me, baby.”

When I said, “Look at my body with all these rashes” he said, “You are still beautiful to me, baby.” When I lost 20 pounds and didn’t look healthy at all, he said, “You are still beautiful to me, baby. I did not marry the sickness I married the love of my life. I still have my wife and our kids still have their momma.”

Now, tell me if that’s not the best birthday gift a down-home, Southern gal like me could ask for?

Thanks again to all my prayer warriors and the encouraging phone calls, texts, delicious meals, home visits, birthday gifts and Pastors Steve Cardwell and Phyllis Cardwell for taking us under their wings when we moved to Fort Knox from Louisville.

I thank God for each and every one of you!

Theresa, you are truly one of the most courageous, faith-filled women I know. Obviously I'm biased (and scoffers are wont to doubt) but I've never seen anyone go from such a severe decline in their health to a dramatic, 180-degree turnaround in such a short period of time. I was there every step of the way. I know what I saw. The earnest prayers of righteous people have great power and produce wonderful results. Happy birthday, hon! I love you!

Thank you for the update OD and happy birthday Theresa! It's is wonderful to hear that she has made such dramatic improvement, being cleared to return to teaching has to be such a wonderful step and sign of recovery.

Thanks, Chris. We're forever changed after this ordeal, but we definitely gained more than we lost in the process. It was a Job experience I would wish on no one. But God remains faithful to His word.

It's hard, exasperating work cultivating a faith life. And I understand why so many fall to the wayside of doubt and disbelief. It takes fervent prayer and daily reading, studying and mediating on God's word. A suspension of the natural you won't find much to hang your head on in today's stoic, cynical, godless, counterculture.

But Theresa and I have seen the power of the living God. Much dross has been burned off our hearts so that we can more clearly see. It is true. He is the Son of God. There is power in His name to heal and to save.

We thank God for all of you on the Vette Barn who prayed for us and encouraged me and my family. You also blessed us through your generous giving.

What a great, big, loving, dysfunctional family we have! On this plane of existence, I can confidently state this; I have no greater glimpse of the Kingdom of Heaven than the love of Christ I see in you all!
