Like I said, a friend had a ~25? ft. Chris Craft twin 305 chebby, fixed props out of the St. Mary's river, and on any given dive/fish/cruise weekend it was a 50-50 chance of seeing a sub running maybe slightly higher in the water as we passed in most any direction now it's true we never spotted any water ski activity there, so maybe THAT was not allowed??

now all this was near 20 years ago, before the 9/11 islamic bullshit.....

Many a weekend one summer helping the owner get his new engines in place and then the entire console/controls all redone, I doing the 'lectrickery' and fixed one of the carbs.....

That's the boat I had to commandeer the helm on once, as the owner nearly broached us in waves about 15' high some 50 miles out, after a scuba dive....so we managed a course made good....

We were always escorted in and out by at least one security boat, nobody would have ever been allowed to get that close.

Visiting him over the years we decided we wanted to retire in the area so we ended up buying a place on Amelia Island

Not doubting what you guys say, but we be leaving some docks behind a restaurant in St. Marys.....and heading east/down the river toward the ocean, and we would pass about 2-3 city blocks from a sub, just as they turning north into the base, sometimes we saw one in the open ocean, I have the drill head from the construction of that marker some 50 miles off shore and north a ways....the guys pulled it up from the bottom when they were scuba diving...it was a battle to get it to the boat, lucky it was a calm day....

At any rate, we never got warned, once we got used to it, we hardly noticed them,....but the first couple times it was really interesting.....

I remember my son in the Scouts, and the troop had a group visit to Norfolk, and we saw the insides/dining area? of the USS Oklahoma City...THAT was interesting... damn near 26 years ago...went down the ladder and landed in a chow hall, and lots of tape over various instruments....I remember turning around and seeing the officer who was working on the presentation, and then glancing to my right, and there was this FOX, no ROCKET FOX!!!, in her navy blues, and I double took, and asked 'do you work on this boat'?? she smiled and said, she was a sonar array tech.....I said isn't this kind of 'close'.....she grinned and said, OH, I stationed on the sub tender next door, but yes I fix this boat.....I didn't THINK chicks did sub sea duty.....

the electronics stuff is what I was interested in, joint was LOADED, and me talking on a even keel with them on the shit surprised hell outta the guys.... one of the very BEST toys any guy would wish for.....
